Due to the impending Tropical Storm Harvey, the Houston Soccer match scheduled for Sunday at Rice has been cancelled. There are no plans to reschedule at this time.

Houston will return to action Sept. 1 when it visits Mississippi State, followed by a Sept. 3 meeting with LSU.

They’re now playing the game Monday at Rice at 5 pm with all gate proceeds going to the United Way Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.

“Even though there are more pressing events happening around the city, we saw an opportunity to do something for the city,” said head coach Diego Bocanegra. “Our players have been constantly asking how they can help. We decided that we could reschedule our previously cancelled game and make it a charity game where we could collect donations and get them to the people in need. Our thoughts and prayers will continue to go out to all of those affected by Harvey. Hopefully we can add some money and necessary items toward the relief.”

Team started well, but fell apart a bit in the 2nd half. Rice was 51st in the nation last year according to RPI.

“It’s definitely difficult. We’re rusty, and I knew we were going to be rusty,” head coach Diego Bocanegra said on how the Cougars prepared for the game after the events of the week. “We had three days to prepare, whereas Rice had their normal schedule. That’s not the reason we lost, but it definitely didn’t help our preparation.”
