So, looking at the stats from the game, it makes more sense as to why CMA had only 44 guys available as it looks like he held out or played many of the starters sparingly. Running Game reportedly looked good, passing game was less good and the defense looked stout. Allen didn’t have the best of days so I imagine that King will get a good look when healthy. Patrick Carr also may be making a case for a good amount of playing time and Derek McLemore seemed to be the QBs favorite target; then again, Dunbar and Bonner were both out.
Prior to the game, news on four significant injuries within the program was announced. Senior tight end Alex Leslie (leg), junior center Will Noble (leg) and junior defensive end Jerard Carter (foot) are all expected back for summer workouts while sophomore wide receiver Marquez Stevenson will unfortunately miss the 2017 season with a torn ACL.
Better recap than the UH site one. Goes a little more in depth to who was playing and who wasn’t.
Conclusion Overall, this game was about finding depth within the roster. With multiple players forced to the sideline with injuries, second and third string players received opportunities to showcase their talent.
There is plenty of work to be done, but the Cougars now have time to rest up, bring incoming freshmen onto the roster, and heal those injured players.
While Kyle Allen, a transfer from Texas A&M, is regarded as the likely choice, Applewhite said two injured candidates - D’Eriq King (knee) and Kyle Postma (foot) - will get a chance to challenge for the job early in camp before a decision is made on the starter for the Sept. 2 opener at UTSA.
Although there is no official post-spring depth chart, Applewhite indicated Allen is listed at the top based on taking a majority of the snaps in 15 spring workouts and Postma is No. 2 based on his previous experience. He called King a “sharp, productive player” who saw action at receiver and on kick returns as a freshman.
Awesome Patrick.
It is already hard to judge from a distance but with so many missing players it is even harder. We are clearly in a “building mode” and trying to add depth but Carr getting some good stats is encouraging. Catalon and Carr can be very promising. This will open up our offense and help Allen. Don’t discount TE’s plays. It is not apparent right now or not even part of our offense but I would not be surprised if we see some surprises. Throw in double coverage with an int? We all want Allen to learn from his mistakes and his good plays. This Spring and up coming season is Allen’s. Biggest question is “Will he answer?” I can’t wait.
RB’s looked good as well as the Jack Boyz but too much sideline to sideline passing. Those times they did go deep the passes were int’d. I thought 13 was Allen based on reps.
