Talks of UTSA and UTHSCSA merging

Talk of merging UTSA with the UT Health Center in San Antonio. They’ve looked into it in the past, but determined that UTSA wasn’t up to par academically to make it worth the Health Center’s time. With UTSA’s progress, there are calls again to look into it. How does this affect Houston: this would probably vault UTSA up there with Tech, UT-Dallas and Houston in regards to Tier 1 in the state which could have an impact on money distribution from the state down the road.

The Move to Merge UTSA and UTHSCSA

We believe that combining UTSA and UTHSCSA would create a national powerhouse, enhancing Texas’s reputation for academic excellence. A merger would expand the research capacity and academic strength currently enjoyed by the two institutions separately. The combined university would clearly find itself on the state’s list of Tier One institutions. It would also strengthen the Health Science Center’s mission of training doctors and nurses; conducting world-class research; fighting cancer, diabetes, and other diseases; and improving health care throughout South Texas.

Even more important for UH to try and get a med school ASAP.
