UH baseball assistant Trip Couch takes South Carolina job

Really get to see what Whitting is made of now as he’s having to replace 2 of his top 3 coaches this year (after replacing the other last year). Couch was pretty important, but Rooney coming in and Shotzberger staying should cover for him.

Couch spent the past seven seasons with the Cougars, his second stint with the program, as recruiting coordinator and took over a more active role with the offense this season.

Dammit. Trip was a hell of an asset to our program. It’s disappointing to have our two top assistant coaches make lateral moves, even if they’re going to SEC programs. In Trip’s case, I’m not even sure that’s a lateral move - directors of player personnel generally aren’t assistant coaches.

I agree. This is disappointing to say the least. Rooney, on paper, looks like a great replacement for Anderson who, in my opinion, was absolutely incredible as a pitching coach. Couch, in my book, is a great recruiter, and I don’t know if it was Couch or Barker, but someone was doing a number with the hitters this year, because I cannot remember the last time we hit the ball as well as we did this year.

I do know this Couch was a big part of the success back in the early 2000s when Noble had his great teams. Noble’s decline can date back to the loss of all of his key assistants, Whitting, Couch, and Stockton.

Here is wishing and hoping Whitting can find another good assistant.

After two seasons as assistant coach with the Cougars from 2012-13, Shotzberger has spent the past two seasons as UH’s director of player development.

VanAllen has spent two seasons as a manager for the Cougars. He previously spent seven years in the Washington Nationals farm system and two seasons with the independent Sugar Land Skeeters.
