The effort brought in more than $40,000 worth of supplies, which were donated to 13 Texas schools, said organizer Kaycie Rathburn, a pharmacy student. Donations poured in from around the country.

Before Harvey slammed Houston, Rathburn and fellow students aimed to support schools along the coast. They expanded their goals as Houston-area schools saw severe damage, she said.

Donors around the country shipped goods to Rathburn’s parents’ house, she said. They sent cash donations via the smartphone application Venmo, too.
