Iā€™m glad youā€™re not Major.

Changing both coordinators at once?

the bottom line of any defense is ā€œHow many points you give upā€ā€¦yards donā€™t get counted in the score or decide the winner.

Orlando is greatā€¦no question. Iā€™m not criticizing, Im defending DOnofrio by making a comparison. Do you understand the effect that turnovers by offense had on TT game? 5 total(one punt ret fumble). The offense scored 14 points in last 7 mins against a preventā€¦TT was up 17 and not gonna allow quick scores. ANDā€¦Orlando just lost to TT didnā€™t they? And scored 14 4th qtr points .

They both played Riley Ferguson and Memphisā€¦Orlando gave up 48 offensive points, DOnofrio 35ā€¦both lost. Orlando 555 yards, DOnofrio 501

Navy ā€¦Orlando 37 points given up and 382 yards, DOnofrio 14 points and 297 yards

SMUā€¦Orlando 38 points and 406 yardsā€¦DOnofrio 22 points and 544 yards. So CMD gave up 140 more yards than CTO but 16 less points and won .

UH has 14 intsā€¦and several dropped thru 11 gamesā€¦Orlando D had 7 in 13 games last year

Finally 2016 CTO defense gave up 24.2 offensive points/gmā€¦#40
Currently 2017 CMD defense giving up 21.8 and ranked #35ā€¦can verify at teamrankings.com

And A Robinson started his first game ever at LB vs Memphisā€¦Adams didnā€™t play.

Iā€™m not sure if an OC/DC has ever been tried at the D1 level before. Itā€™s a bold strategy, indeed.

Yep, Williams and Denley also have starting experience on the OL
Car has good experience at RB
Corbin started a game or 2 and was in the rotation the last 2 years
Vaughan and Fleming got some PT this year on DL
Godfrey was in the mix at LB
J.Williams got some good PT

5 biggest keys right now

  • figuring out the 3 WRs is huge, but a lot of talented options there
  • need to replace Adams and Hines which could be tough as ARob was their backup and heā€™s also gone
  • Need to figure out CB even with all 3 main guys returning
  • figure out the right side of the line
  • Find a KR and PR

4 players off last years defense are on NFL rostersā€¦Both Wilsonā€™s, Bowser and Malveaux.
And had 4 year starter in Steve Taylor. On top of that, 2016 had much more depth. depth was an issue when season startedā€¦then lost Dbā€™s Smalls, Stuard, Wilder, K. Smith. MLB lost Adams for 2 games and had start Robinson(no previous starts). Kahlil Williams for 2 games and had play LBs in pass coverage. 2 of 3 corners no experience.

What is disturbing is that most all if not all were Levine recruits !

I think we should hope everything stays the same. That way we can end this nightmare sooner rather than later. Keep them both.

Thatā€™s good enough to make the jump to 10 wins in year 2. I hope every one of those players are 100% the entire spring camp. We have a shot to claim the West.

We can all agree that creating turnovers is part of the defense (along with getting off the field on 3rd and long). We went from # 2 in turnover margin to #84 under Dā€™onofrio. That helps an offense that has its struggles, even under Herman.

My biggest frustration was watching Tulane eat the clock most of the game and, when we finally take the lead, they take advantage of our corners playing 7 yards off the ball and go right down the field in a minute. Something that Memphis did at will in the second half.

One last thing, Orlandoā€™s D held B12 opponents to half their season scoring avg. And in a league that throws it around much more than ours. When he got here, the only player on that D mentioned with potential NFL talent was W Jackson. Bowser had shown flashes but that was it. And Roberts wasnā€™t highly thought of going into his senior year. Itā€™s about a coach developing players to reach their full potential.

We might have to define demoted to avoid any further confusion. I mean it in the context of temporary loss of play-calling duties(as it was obvious CMA remained the OC). Iā€™m not sure which games they were, but Iā€™m pretty sure Herman took over play calls last year, and in year one. Last year I think it was Tulsa or SMU. In 2015 I think Cinci. I canā€™t remember for sure. Iā€™d have to watch the beginning of each game to figure it out; the announcers are not too shy about ā€œannouncingā€ a glitch in the system we call Cougar Football.

Sure wasnā€™t the SMU game because Herman wasnā€™t involved at all and looked like he didnā€™t want to be there.

My issue with donofrio is that he ALWAYS went soft when we got a lead.
Itā€™s like the pitcher with the 10-10 record with the 3.20 ERA. But he seems to lose all of the close games.
He cant seem to pitch as well as the opposing pitcher.

OMG :joy::joy:

These are facts!

rns91,

I will start again by saying orlando great DCā€¦if Texas not have him they would be in bigger trouble. Im going to show you that your view is based on perception mainlyā€¦that Orlando is aggressive, so heā€™s better. He may be betterā€¦but numbers show your argument doesnā€™t hold up.
Turnovers -Agreed creating them is importantā€¦CMD 2017 defense is #20 Ints per game 1.3(14 in 11games vs D1 opps) and donā€™t forget drops by Winchester vs Memp and Johnson vs ECU. Also had one called back vs Temple, Davis int right into chest, but Johnson holding. Orlando 2016 ā€¦0.6 per gameā€¦less than half 2016ā€¦ only 7 in 12 games vs D1 opps

Takeawaysā€“(D1 Opps)-2017 CMDā€¦#38ā€¦1.7 per gameā€¦2016 CTOā€¦1.4 per game

the real reason TO margin is bad is UH 2017 offense ā€¦1.9 per game #111ā€¦2016 ā€¦2.0

re Tulaneā€¦the late TD had nothing to do with corners. Slot receiver ran down the seamā€¦UH was playing Tampa 2 coverageā€¦2 deep safeties and MLB Adams dropping deep middle. Adams got sucked up by playactionā€¦on replay you see him frantically running backwards waving his arms because he knows heā€™s late. Once catch is made, both safeties fail to make a play. If CMD had played press man and gave up TD, the board would go nuts as well and say heā€™s an idiot for getting beat over top.

Memphis-agreed 2nd half was badā€¦35 points vs CMD defense. However, what UH did to them in 1st halfā€¦0 points and 2 turnovers leading to 10 offensive points was super impressive. Orlando in 2016 gave up 34 points in 1st halfā€¦scored on all 6 drivesā€¦4 TD and 2 FG. He held them in 3rd quarter but gave up 2 4th qtr TDā€™s losing lead twice. memphis is pretty good on offense.48 points allowed

Orlando defense vs Oklahoma was super impressive. So he gets a pass for Navy, SMU, and Memphis? As impressive as it was, Memphis was horrible. His game plan for Navy was horrendous. He played 5 man front all insideā€¦Navy ran 34 running plays in first halfā€¦NOT 1 DIVEā€¦for 193 yards and I believe 20 points. There was no body there for the pitch. Many here have clouded views because they are impressed with the big wins vs ranked opponentsā€¦and we all should beā€¦but CTO not perfect. So was he a genius vs Oklahoma, but forgot how to coach vs memphis? Players have something to do with outcome believe it or not.

DOnofrioā€™s corners are brutalā€¦thats why he plays them off. Johnson converted WR and Myers a former walk on. If Wilson had stayed, he could have locked down boundary receiverā€¦which he tried to do at times with Johnson and Winchester but they got beat regularly. All the DBs are bad with ball in air as you saw with T. Williams vs Navy, had coverage and screwed it up by stopping running and let TE behind him. He did same vs Memphis and then added facemark penalty onto it. As many good plays as Davis and T. Williams have made, they have made just as many blown coverages and missed tackles that have been big play scores. Kahlil is also an issue with tackling. CMD used him man to man on slot before he got hurtā€¦he wasnā€™t great but it gave him an option. He had a pass int vs Memp on 3rd down that kept a drive aliveā€¦ball was uncatchable. He also got beat on a 3rd down in man for another 1st down. The 1st half defense vs Memp was off the charts and way over UH headā€¦the 2nd half badā€¦in the end they probably scored about what you would think they wouldā€¦35(and KO ret didnā€™t helpā€¦btw Kahlil missed tackle on that). What made it so bad was losing the leadā€¦but donā€™t forgetā€¦the 17-0 lead UH had was due to 2 turnovers created by the defense. Fumble gave UH ball at Memp 28ā€¦TD. Davis int ret to Memp 16 and get FG. And although Postma made many great plays, he fumbled twice in 2nd half inside Memphis territory and late int at end.

Orlando is aggressive and gave up 14 4th quarter points and lost to Tech last week didnā€™t he?

UH TT game was about 5 UH turnoversā€¦4 in 1st halfā€¦the defense was on field 52 plays in 1st half for only 190 yards or 3.65 per play and we only trailed 13-10. TT gets ball start 2nd halfā€¦3 and out. UH drives to TT 19ā€¦Allen throws another int. UH allows a drive and TT missed FG. Offense punts againā€¦then big plays happened and continued punts by offense until TT went prevent vs Postma up by 17.

Memphis was not softer defense than first half. CMD brought 5 rushers continually but Ferguson escaped 3 or 4 times. He also started throwing deep even though we were playing zone and corners off. We had 2 def pass interference and ball he hung up in air where myers and Te.Williams couldnā€™t find ball. Winchester drop int in end zoneā€¦huge.

Tulsa was about offensive turnoversā€¦def allowed 93 first half yards and no pointsā€¦until Postma int returned to UH 1. He did it again in 3rd qtr and returned to 6. Then Davis let WR go when he had him tackledā€¦sitting on top him and whistle not blowā€¦ran 70 yards TD. and last Postma fumble with 30 secs left ret for TD. offense scored 17 vs horrible Tulsa defense and defense again got gassed in extreme heat and no DL depth at time.

Tulane ā€¦the defense had given up 13 pointsā€¦3 on FG after Catalon fumbleā€¦and blew it giving up long TD. The offense scored 17 againā€¦blown red zone pointsā€¦4 trips and just 10 points out possible 28. You need to look at context of gamesā€¦Tulsa
scoreboard showed 45 points, however, 7 were directly on offense and another 14 on 1 and 6 yard drives because turnovers. And Davis stopped playing and gave up 70 yard TD. CMD had nothing to do with those things happening. maybe his D could have held to a FG from 6. And we got gashed by run after all that happenedā€¦heat killed usā€¦tulsa had worst run defense in country and we rushed for 3.1 per rushā€¦we could have given the defense a breakā€¦where was game plan by HC?

He has to become more exotic. And I donā€™t mean his usual show 5 rush 3, with corners playing 10 yards off of the ball. lol
