Your argument does not hold water. We are not in a P5 so you can’t predict what we will do. What you can study is our past. How many SWC’s Championships did we win in our first five years? Look it up. Why do you think uta and atm joined forces to get us into probation? Look it up.
I have no doubt that given the same tools without the uta’s trying to get us on probation we will win multiple National Salad Bowls within a relatively short period of time. People can make statements like they want. We are a free country but I do believe people have a sense of pride. Playing in a P5 and staying in the Houston area will be a very simple choice for the majority of 4 to 5 stars. The only one that can come close is atm due to their proximity. uta has lost its luster and now mean very little to many. Their last five to seven years is a crystal clear indication of who they are are.
The SWC was a cesspool and every team, except rice, was on probation.
14 bowl games since the SWC ended wit only 4 wins. How many conference championships since the SWC folded? UT and aTm are anything but scared of us. And that’s a good thing because fear doesn’t foster friendships and UH needs friends, or at least not enemies, to help us get where we want to be.
Athletic program performance is very much like mutual funds. Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. All programs, even the elite, go through ups and downs. I do appreciate the extreme optimism, and truly hope we can eventually get there, but it will be a tough road. I will enjoy the ride regardless of its difficulty.
Keep ignoring the past that is always very convenient. We have not been in a P5 since 1996. Who in the world do you think do not want us in for obvious reasons? They learned their lesson in the SWC. They want to keep us out at all cost. That is the definition of being scared. You are not scared uta? Get us in then. It is as simple as that. Ignoring the soon to be third biggest City in America with new facilities makes no business sense. So why on earth do you think they want us out? You are either ignoring the obvious or do not know our history.
Still waiting to know what separates our past and our potential from SMU.
You keep repeating that over and over but so far, with the exception of a failing big east, no bcs, or p5 has come calling. Surely our athletic achievements were better than Rutgers or Maryland. And definitely on par with Colorado. Or how about our potential being stronger than Missouri who used the be tied for doormat of the big 8. Utah is a flagship but our media market is surely bigger than their entire state.
The more you say that ut and aTm are afraid of us, the more you are resigned to the fact that we won’t join them. Why would anyone invite a team they are afraid of? They won’t. Media market be damned because it apparently is not as important as you say it is. Nor is recruiting area.
I have never written that I am resigned. We will join a P5. I am convinced of it. When we do the volcano will erupt. Great things are coming.
Fair enough. I’m not trying to say that we’re unique and others have not had something similar ok. Obviously the other schools you mentioned are stepping stones. My point is that I feel that every time we have a good thing going we have to start over. If we had more revenue then we would have a better chance of preventing coaches from leaving, better players coming, and we would be a consistent 10+ win team.
Understand, I respect your side/opinion and enjoy an open discussion. Unfortunately text is not the same as the tone we may intend.
All your arguments could just as much apply to UCF and USF. Visit their boards and you’ll see their fans making claims about how they’d dominate in any P5, which is why everyone is afraid to add them.
Here is the simple fact: opposition from UT and OU would mean nothing if the networks had stepped in and demanded UH be added to the Big 12 (sorry I refuse to call it little 12, it sounds ridiculous to call it little 12 now and then call it Big 12, if they add us.).
Conversely, even if we had 100% from UT and OU, it would mean nothing If the networks had opposed it.
You can hate UT and make as much fun you like of the Big 12, heal all your scorn on both, the real villains the networks. The day we have support from the networks, some P5 will snap UH up.
Again your media comment contradicts itself. Our good ratings did not go unnoticed. Ratings are what drives advertisers. uta drives the small 12 mini bus since its creation. Their worst nightmare is that we get into a P5. You can be sure that when the invitation will come they will bend over backwards to get us into the small 12. They want to control us at close length by either blocking our entry or put shackles if we get in. I invite you to look back when the SEC wanted us. History will repeat itself. I sure hope we turn them down. They are the small 12 scared conference. I repeat. The small 12 scared conference.
Still waiting on what makes our history better and our potential greater than SMU if they went P5.
You are going to wait a lot longer. I do not use my butt to make a point. You can either be civil or not.
Before I said that, you did say that everyone that disagrees with you has their head in the sand. I guess calling people a scared ostrich is more civil than saying the word “butt.” Hypocritical at best.
I have read here about the SEC wanting us, but haven’t been able to find anything on it online. Was there any real interest or was it just a case of Fans thinking there was, you know kinda like Hunter tried to make it appear that the PAC 12 wanted us, as a way of trying to force the Big 12 hand?
We may be getting the best ratings, but the networks still have no reason to pay $38 million for us, when they can get by paying 80% less. The Big 12 could have gone to the networks and and said they want UH. The networks could have held a carrot and stick. The carrot being an financially sweetened contract, the stick being threats or outright demands that the Big 12 not expand and risk future problems with the networks.
The Big 12, if it had voted to expand, would have had to add at least 2 teams. For 2017, the networks would have had to dish out $76 million to the Big 12, for programs the networks are currently playing less than $10 million for. UH needed a suitable partner. BYU would have been the best, but who knows what the politics there was.
Expansion with 2 G5 carries too much risk for the conference and networks, so it’s not a decision either would make lightly. Given that there were no pressing reasons or pressures to expand, both the Big 12 and their media partners did what makes the best sense. Let things stand, and see how things unfold before expanding.
The pressure on G5 to join a P5, is far greater than the pressure on any P5 to expand at this time.
I haven’t followed ratings for the other G5 programs, but if they are good too, you could even make the claim that G5 are in effect subsidizing the P5!
No conference will go against the wishes of its media partners. Even UT would have to bow down to ESPN, if ESPN/ABC had demanded that the Big 12 add UH. Thanks to the LHN, UT has a strong relationship with ESPN/ABC, and even stronger incentives to keep them happy.
Both the networks and the Big 12 got what they wanted by not expanding. Now, as you say, if the situation changes and the same networks want UH in a P5, you can bet the Big 12, or Pac 12 (the 2 most likely conferences for UH), will take UH. The sweetest thing would be the 2 getting into a bidding war.
