With all the young players, it will take time to establish the culture.
Rebounding is where I see this the most.
Sampson expects to miss shots, but get more opportunities than the other team through rebounding.
There is work to do. He will get it done.
I’m concerned about this season a bit. In the past. Sampson has had 2 or 3 years minimum to work freshmen into his system. This is the first time we will be dealing potentially with more than 1 one-and-done freshmen, and I feel this is something that the coaching staff has not dealt with in the past.
Jarace Walker comes to mind. He was serviceable to us, but I don’t recall him being a defining factor in the year that he was with Sampson.
Basically. I’m concerned that we won’t have enough time to get the freshmen up to speed before conference play. This is aside from the complications we are already have with JoJo not playing up to par.
McCarty & Uzan have turned the corner…
Freaking box outs are TERRIBLE!!!
JWalk was a beast on defense and on the boards when he played here…
His offense was hit, or miss, but he was a dog on D!
Up to 33% as a team from 3pt (61 of 185)
26.7% for Milos
First 4 games UH shot .287 from 3 as a team, last 3 games .390
Look for UH to make a statement today.
Third game in three days, hope we have the legs
Same for them…
I’ve thinking about that as well. Sampson always says something to the effect not “getting caught too young” and this is the first time I can recall where he’s leaning heavily on freshman to play significant minutes. Clearly we don’t expect all these young players to play like experienced seniors, and at the same time, we don’t know how good they can be. Flemings is the only player I trust that can play on both ends of the court. I mean, despite the loss yesterday, he was the best player on the court.
I know it’s early in the season so now isn’t the time to panic but as of now the defense has a long ways to go before it reaches last years level. We also have a long ways to go with the offense, starting with the lack of interior play. I’m really hoping to see the staff post Cenac up over JoJo. His mid range turnaround jumper against Auburn looked solid. Gotta have someone inside to draw the perimeter defenders so they’re not chasing our guys off the line like Tennessee did yesterday.
We win that game yesterday if we didnt have the defensive lapses that led to some easy buckets. We usually can wade through a bad offensive spurt because we have an airtight defense.
Yesterday Tennessee played great defense against our offense. It was hard for us to even make any entry pass in the halfcourt. Their positioning was excellent and their hands were super fast. But even with that great defense, we win if we don’t lose our man on screens or make the wrong switches on defense.
(you could also argue that we win if we dont make some lazy passes that we tried, Flemings included. TN took advantage of each one. and thats an offense problem)
They literally don’t exist this year.
I don’t know. He made some spectacular plays but was very inconsistent with his defensive rotations, especially during non-conference.
Boxing out is a fundamental every player should learn no later than high school.
So many kids these know very little about playing defense much less blocking out.
AAU ball truly sucks
Would be great if Lath could become a shut-down defensive (edited) big man.
On defense, right? ![]()
That’s a great story.
