2025-2026 Houston Cougars Basketball Season

Doesn’t seem quite right to me. Not an abundance of experience or strength, even with tug

Fluff:

  • Kelvin Sampson signed a new 4-year deal to remain head coach at Houston, expressing fulfillment in coaching with family and developing players within a strong program culture.

  • He reflected on Houston’s deep 2024 NCAA Tournament run, citing key wins over Gonzaga, Purdue, and Tennessee before narrowly losing to Florida in the Final Four due to foul trouble and key possessions.

  • Sampson praised Emanuel Sharp for his leadership and performance throughout the season, emphasizing that one missed shot doesn’t define his value or contributions.

  • He highlighted the program’s culture and consistency, noting six straight Sweet 16 appearances and crediting the team’s summer preparation, standards, and player leadership as core to their success.

  • Houston went undefeated on the road in their first Big 12 season, including a dramatic win at Kansas, which Sampson credited to the team’s resilience and discipline.

  • Sampson supports rule changes like switching to quarters, increasing summer practice hours, and allowing late-game ball advancement, while expressing concerns about the new challenge rule removing referee discretion.

22min mark speaks on players

  • Bryce might be redshirted, but its not a lock, but with NIL it might be better for him (5 years of checks)
  • best bench he’s ever had. but likely still sticking with a 9 man rotation
  • only Milos, Sharp and Jojo are expected to start… completely open for the other 2 and he has no idea who will get it… 1st time he’s felt like that here (normally has an idea)
  • cenac could be at the 4… Kalifa solid backup center option
  • Reemphasizes the open competition: 1st real open competition of his time here- Mercy Miller, Kingston Flemings, Isiah Harwell, Kordell Jefferson, Ramon Walker and Chase have all been told they can win the starting spot… and says any of them can easily win it

Insinuation but not directly stated

  • sharp moving to SG, speaks on players taking over sharps spot “as big guard”

Schedule:
6 high level games scheduled (agreed on but not signed) - all 6 are nuetral… Sampson wants a 7th at Fertitta to do right be the fans- looks like its more of an idea, says they cant find a big team willing (all want neutrals) but they are trying

  • 3 with NIL era, toyota, Barclays and auburn in Bham
  • 6 or 7 will likely be the toughest non-con we’ve had in the modern era and by a margin depending on how he views "high level games "
  • 6 or 7 buy games depending on if the 7th “high level” comes to fruiting - 3 of the buy games are already known

Syracuse and Tennessee are in our 4pod for the NIL era, sampson doesnt recall the 3rd. its not bracketed, you just get scheduled your 1st 2…point system for the last… (reach by me: sampson remembered the 2 we are scheduled to play, and not the one we arent, could be wrong) either way we know 2/3rd of our potential 1st 2 games

So looking like St. John’s at Barclays… think I’m going to queue up a trip for that

If we aren’t playing. st John’s at the players era, that has to be the Barclays game

Dammit numbers beat me by like 3 seconds. Lol

Madison Square Garden would be cooler but ah well.

Theory: Jojo had screws put in his foot after his last injury, is it possible this surgery was to remove those screws? Similar to Sharp having the metal post removed from the leg he broke in high school.

“First”? Did they? Or is it trying to say…

  • “for the first time in the Big 12 participation”?
  • 2nd?

typo… 2nd

damn the unnamed big teams don’t even want home and homes anymore :sob:

Playing St. John at Barclays would be a fun trip but I’m planning to go Vegas for 2-3 Players Era games. We know Tenn will be good but anyone know anything about Cuse?

Sleeper team in the acc… when I was looking at the player era list a few weeks ago I always knew they would at least pair us with one bad team to try and even out the field. (Everyone is getting atleast 1 subpar team) the “bad” team I was hoping for Syracuse. They were the bad team with the highest upside.

14-19 last year… but their star players return…

  • 18 pts scorer/ former 5star JJ starling
  • 14pt 8rb PF/ former 5star Donnie freeman (only a freshmen last year)
  • Added Gtechs star PG (top 50 transfers)
  • A top 10 recruiting class (2 top 30, including Carmelo Anthony’s son )
  • 3 other semi - notable transfer

Not a title contending roster or anything, but could surprise some people , could stack some wins in a weaker acc … NIT, maybe bubble team if one of their freshmen is a success
