The 2025 MLB draft is being aired today at 5pm on ESPN. The baseball draft may not have the pizzazz that the football and basketball drafts have, but nevertheless, for hard core baseball fans, it has more than a modicum of interest.
The Astros have one first round pick (#21), third round (#95), fourth round (#126), fifth round (#156), and rounds 6 thru 20 (#21).
This does really seem to be the truth when it comes to prospect evaluation. If things fall right, we may be hearing “how do the Astros keep doing this?” for a while.
We’ll see about the Neyens….not sure how quick he’ll be….we drafted a college guy, Cam Fisher( 4th round)in 2023……put up big numbers….got to pro ball and can’t hit a lick.
His only tool is power and he strikes out over 50% of the time in low A ball.
I’m leery of guys without a plus hit tool……having said that I’ll wait and see on this kid….to take him at #21 he’s got to have more than power.
5th round pick Nick Potter from Wichita St. is a future closer……Big Kid that has touched 100 this year.
Jase Mitchell, Gatorade POY in Delaware this year….big power hitting catcher in the 7th round….might need to go over slot to get him signed.
Really like the kid the Astros got in the 8th round.
Some of you may have seen him play, Kyle Walker the 2b for Arizona St.
Started at Grambling before moving to ASU……really nice hit tool and solid defense.
When you walk more than you strike out in the Big 12, you can hit……this kid has super sub utility guy written all over him.
I don’t know a ton about this kid….he is a big power arm….needs a lot of polishing, which the Astros are one of the best….my guess is he is a two-pitch guy right now….fastball/slider.
Likely doesn’t have the repertoire to be a starter….The Astros will work on a 3rd and 4th pitch to see if it takes….if it does ( and they will give him starts ( short) in the beginning).
If it doesn’t then they have a high leverage, back of the pen type arm——hopefully.
Astros made a handful of signings of undrafted free agents after the draft.
With the draft only being 20 rounds now, there are some really quality guys out there.
There are pitchers that maybe walk too many guys, are not the prototypical size of an MLB pitcher, etc.
For position players it is usually because they only have one or two really strong tools, sometimes they are old, etc.
I am excited the Astros signed Mason Lytle, an OF from UTSA.
Some of you may have seen him play ball as he went to Pearland HS and San Jac….he went to Oregon but was a little banged up and got caught in a numbers game.
His knock is that he is 24 years old.
But he is a DUDE.
Played two seasons at UTSA and was super productive.
