I think last year’s was slightly underrated here. Illinois was Kenpom rated right with us most of the year. They should have been a 2 seed. Had we got a more fair draw we likely make the elite eight. That’s a good season even by our standards. Plus Illinois just matched up well against us. Play someone else in the elite eight and we got a good shot at another FF.

At the same time, that Florida back court was a joke. Last yr in a 1 game win or go home, i wanna play florida over Illinois all day.
The thing is that we remember the whole season, which includes the early part where our defense and rebounding were definitely subpar (for us). And with such a young team still trying to figure out their roles, we saw the entire learning process play out, and that colors our view of the team.
Plus, some people tend to compare teams solely on how far they advanced in the postseason, so they automatically knock them down a notch.

I’m very interested to see how this team which is built more like the coog teams of old performs.
I’m not very excited about dedan. Personally, I think he’s soft and doesn’t have the athleticism nor the speed nor the toughness of Galen, Dejon, Jamal, Uzan or KF. Historically, we’ve gone as deep as our PG could take us.
Our PG’s initiate our defense at the point of attack. And I’m just not seeing it with this guy.
I’m excited to see several players take the second year jump like Mercy and Chase.
Also excited to have three legitimate big men down low. Two nasty, gritty ones. Junkyard dogs that can rebound. And a big shack type one that will only get better as the season goes on, but I don’t expect much out of freshman. But, if he gets it, my projections will definitely change for this team.
Right now, I project this team wins 28+ games, finishes in the top three of the big 12 and goes out in the round of 32.
Another good season but no titles.

Well, I think he’s soft compared to the guys I mentioned.

I think he will be exactly what we need for offense.
Im worried about defense. After the convo on this board yesterday…and Dedan is smaller than what Fleming was. Teams are definitely going to try to get him in foul trouble. Add the fact that Mercy is the other guard.
Weaver may play more than people think. We are going to need good defense on the back end. Moving Tugler to the 4 should help some, but these guards are going to have to learn the defense to make it work or we will see a lot of Weaver.

as others have mentioned dedan is coming in way tougher than uzan and lj … and bother of those guys led us to national title game
the athleicism part is true, in regards to PG… but he is similarly athletic to LJ who we could leave out there for 35mins … but its about give and take… dedan is least athletic pg… but is probably the best ball handler weve had at pg… top 2 play maker (with a case for #1) and best natural scorer weve had at pg
if dedan can handle point defense, we’ll just have him play 2 on defense and mercy/hadnot/weaver run point defense … but i oddly think dedan is going to end up a great pesky defender, he just hasnt had anyone push him to be that becuase he’s had to carry the offensive load
also when i watch dedan i see lack of athleticism… but i dont get soft…
Will Weaver be called on to defend PGs ever?
My guess is no. I see him playing the Mylik Wilson role like some have said. He will come in as a 2 or 3 and play 15-20 minutes backing up Mercy and Chase. Could play longer depending on how Mercy is looking on defense.

My guess is yes. I could see it in some games where Dedan may not be physical enough to handle the defense at the point of attack. Of course we’re both just guessing.
It depends on what CKS decides game-by-game, and I think CKS loves Weaver’s defense.
As far as offense, it seems like Dedan has the green light to run the show the way they talk about his IQ and the way he runs the team. I dont think he will be micro managed. I think he plays as long as he is not hurt, tired, or in foul trouble.
Weaver could come in for Dedan while the 2 runs the PG…but i think its only for a few plays in that scenario. Like Mercy slides to PG and trys to take advantage of a matchup for a few possessions. I dont see Weaver running PG at all on offense though. I cant see Sampson letting him dribble the ball much.
We usually like our three setting up in the corner, that’s not Weaver’s game
