A staff member called Dedan “a PG savant”.
It can be tweaked. Last year Weaver did not shoot well from 3 and was not asked to do it much. Previous year he shot 40%. Not a lot of volume. Junior year bad. Soph year he shot 40% not a lot of volume though
Mylik only took 1 or 2, 3pts per game.
Career he’s a 32%, so not as bad as I thought
I pointed this out before as well…
At UTA his frosh year he shot 40% on 2.6 3 point attempts per game, too…
Seems like he plays the role he’s asked and if he is asked to be a bigger part of the offense he can step into that role… he won’t be asked to do that here, though.
Miller, Hadnot, McCarty, Thomas will be shooting most of our 3s imo…
Maybe Jackson & Alozie but I don’t know what to expect from them…
Jackson had a big summer on a proam team but proam leagues are far from the B12…
Right. I think it will be the exact role Mylik played and he also jumps out the gym like Mylik. If Sampson had Sharp defending 3s, this guy could definitely play some 3 because he is just as good as Sharp (on defense) with more athleticism.
The jury is definitely out on this, but I hope you’re right…
Well…he’s a good defender…but to your point, that does not mean anything if you cant play our style. We do a lot of switching, trapping, and help. You can be a nice one on one defender and still mess our defense up.
Yes, absolutely.
I am curious to see what Jefferson can do. 4* recruit with offers from Tennessee, Tech, TCU, Ole Miss, Miss St, Aggy… Now in his 4th year here, which is hard to believe.
Based on what staff said I wouldn’t expect Kordell to get a whole lot of playing time. I believe a big factor in him coming back is his friendship with JoJo. They’re roomies.
I’m curious how many minutes Alozie will get. UH has a lot of talent at guard.
UH now has a LOT of talent at Guard.
Most ever under Sampson?
I’ve watched interviews with Kordell, he isn’t a “i’m happy on the bench” kind of player. he mentioned before last season that he expected to play and be one of the top guards in the nation. He likely doesn’t come back if he doesn’t see a path to minutes
kellen mentioned him as one of the best defender in the nation, and why we are so good (that our practice squad is a tougher defense than we’ll see in the games)
Hot take: id rather see kord play than weaver
something that is rather interesting to me is i geniunely think something is happening in the background that we might not know about …1) someone is injured that we dont know 2) weaver is coming in accpeting he isnt getting pt - and this is a coaching career prep
just 2 motnhs ago sampson said he didnt want to bring in any major guards becuase our players would transfer out in that scenario. he mentioned that is the current dynamic. no offense to weaver he isnt good enough to be worth imploding our chemistry, if the intent was to have him jump guys
The injury thing has floated my mind when weaver signed.
- elite 8 year (before inury) - sasser, shead, tramon, edwards, taze, ramon
- final 4 year- Grimes, Dejon, Mills, sasser, tramon, shead, tyson
- sassers senior season - sasser, shead, tramon, sharp, Arcenueax (we had junior mylik but redshirted him on depth alone)
all 3 were better guard talent than on paper that next year
health or 1 legit center addition was the difference between those team probably being the best in the nation
I agree about the eye test. Flemings was so physically gifted that he could make good defensive plays, but not the sustained physical toughness that Shead had even as a soph. on offense he got consistently flustered when he was called for a foul for kicking his foot out on threes, so that he would keep complaining to the refs for several plays afterwards. it got so bad the tv announcers were commenting on it. the fact that he could let himself get distracted like that speaks to his youth and lack of the kind of relentless focus that a leader needs. and i thought his youth showed more as the year went on. as you say, the TEAM was lacking, and Flemings looked to me like one of the reasons. no knock on him; he’s very young, and he showed his youth. a great player, no doubt, but i’m inclined to vote for soph Shead over him.
I would love to see Kordell get some quality PT. He’s been loyal and patient. I’m rooting for the guy.
Doesnt make sense for Weaver to come and not play. He could have went somewhere else.
I agree it could make other players on the roster mad, but transfers are the new wave. Cant have guys transferring in and not playing either. Because it could also hurt getting transfers in the future.
May not be a lot of minutes. But Weaver is coming to play. The way the roster looks, Sampson is going 9 deep consistently. With probably only Dedan and Tugler playing over 30 minutes.
In college basketball today there is no substitute for experience. Assuming that experience also has talent. 2/5 of our starters were true frosh. It’s tough to beat the really good teams with one true frosh in the starting lineup let alone two. It’s the small details especially on defense that us fans do not know about that comes into play.
Seems like there was a 3 game stretch where Flemings was getting into it with the refs. Im a homer so i think it was rigged… but we were getting screwed on calls. We would get called for some ticky tack fouls and he wasnt getting the benefit on the other end. So he started the foul baiting like NBA players. Refs didnt like that at all.
