2026-27 Houston Cougars Basketball Season

Do we get that Montana Tech “exhibition” as part of ST package?

I’m pulling for a game vs WVU there, for selfish reasons

Ok Pesik. I just don’t agree. And that’s fine, we’ll leave it at that. Reducing shorter guards career successes to “because they were shorter and had to stay longer,” is a bit absurd to me, but I digress. And yes Sasser staying 4 years and leaving before he lost eligibility nullifies your point. And dismisses that he may have left before that if he hadn’t gotten injured. Anywho, I digress

It was one of those games that didn’t load into my calendar, so I have no answer.

Pesik, my opinion isn’t formed around “likes.” Respectfully, there’s a fair number of people in here that aren’t as knowledgeable as you when it comes to basketball. A lot of very casual UH fans, and that’s not a knock, just a truth. So my statement stands, it’s absurd to slot him i to the top spot. To say, “he had a chance to be one of the best,” is totally fair. And I loved Nate because he was a DOG. He was not the star of that team though, I personally don’t think there was one. That was a team of collective talent if we’ve ever had one. Almost like 24-25 it was more of a collective more than one lead star imo

I think it’s because you speak in absolutes. Not my style. They sound outrageous to me.

Im a little confused by this comment. Do you mean 3s? Last season our bucket getter was King. Sharpe when his 3 was falling.

This upcoming season seems to have several bucket getters. Recco can score and get his own shot. He is definitely more of a bucket getter compared to what we have had. Dedan can also score in different ways. Once again…Mercy??? Seen him play? He honestly has the potential to be a more athletic Cryer.

We have 4 bucket getters. Compared to 2.

I hope you’re right.

Agree we have bucket-getters with DJ, Mercy and Hadnot. Excited to see some Gillespi just can’t say he will be getting his own shot until I see it.

If Mercy is near the shooter Cryer was he will be first team AA, but not seeing that comparison. I think he can be a go-to scorer just different styles.

Jojo I think will be a nice alternative defenses can’t sleep in.

I still think we have other options who can develop this season in Chase and Weaver.

I dont think Mercy will be as good as Cryer was from 3, but scoring in other ways, i think Mercy will be very similar. Moving without the ball. Not just standing still and taking set 3s. Someone who can dribble and score. Make a layup. Pull up and score 2. Draw contact and get to the line.

Mercy should be respectable from 3 though. He will be similar to King where he may not take many because he feels whoever is on him cant guard him and stop him from getting a better shot.

He most likely will have some games where he is in the zone and score almost 20 and have some where he is doing too much and poor shot selection and have to be benched. Mercy has the mentality he can score on anybody

If MM can get that 3P% into the upper 30% range (around where KF was last year), he’ll be so tough to guard. But he’s not going to work the midrange or shoot the 3 like LJ. He’ll get more points going to the basket and rebounding.

I assume Mercy and Chase have been going against our 1st team defense for 2 years…they wont see too many defenses that will cause them problems. Probably the reason they had so much confidence and swagger.

Who is making the trip to NYC? Flight is booked, just waiting on tickets. Emailed ticket rep and they claim UH may not have ticket allotment.

In my opinion, bucket getters and 3 point shooting are not necessarily even correlated at all. In fact, it may even have a negative correlation sometimes. Same with athleticism, same with FT rate. They can come with that package and often do, but not necessarily. You can’t just point to these things and find a bucket getter.

Milan Momcilovic was a star, a shooter, AND a scorer.

He was NOT a bucket getter.

Maybe it’s because he was a poor athlete. Oh wait, how do we explain Georges Niang then? The ultimate bucket getter.

J’wan was a bucket getter. So was Kingston. Eman? Well yeah, but kind of. Probably! But also maybe not tho…

It’s not so much a science as it is an art. Coach might get what im talking about. @IowaCoog It’s all of those things and none of those things.

But it’s real. You feel it as much as you see it, certainly more than you can quantify it or pin it down.

It’s a knack. It’s a swagger. It’s a creativity thing. It’s problem solving in the flesh. It’s a propensity and a resilience. It’s a self-perpetuating pressure that just stays at a head and propagates. It’s just a bucket.

These things don’t translate to message boards well. It’s just hard to define.

i dont see the cryer/mercy comp at all… like at all

imo, itll be rob gray as closest comp… not as acrobatic but mercy is 3inches bigger and wont need to be… but similar type of shooting splits (on less volume)

To me a bucket getter is a hooper. When you need a bucket, they will find a way to get it. They have several ways to score. Even CKS hinted at it. You dont have to draw a play up for a bucket getter. Hustle, being at the right place, right time. Just knowing how to hoop. Spontaneous.

Thats why i said Cryer was our bucket getter. I also agree with your point about Jwan. It may not be pretty, but he would find a way.

Last year our bucket getter was King…(and MERCY in his limited time and small sample size.)

The Cryer comp was pretty much as a bucket getter and scorer without relying on the 3. Cryer knew spacing and finding the right spot.
Cryer used a high IQ and fundamentals to score. Thats not really Mercy either. He is a better athlete, so he will try to score over you.

Back to the bucket getters…we will have 4. Just wonder why Hadnot was mentioned and not Mercy, DJ and Recco. Their film shows nothing but hustle, athleticism and getting buckets. 3s are what seems to be missing.

Mercy could be the X factor for our team. His offense will get him on the floor but it’s his defense that will keep him on or off the floor.

That’s what I’m saying. Curtis Jones is a great example. He was never a starter, but he was still 1st team All-Big 12, in additon to the unanimous 6th man of the year.

He was even in the driver’s seat for POY for quite a while despite coming off the bench. He ultimately came up short, but he was right there.

It is such a weapon to be able to inject that into the mix at will. There’s a real stigma against that, and I think there’s a hang up there related to that w/ fans. But to me, this is the type of program w/ players who aren’t gonna worry about that.

There’s nuance to this, but I think it’s pretty rare for even the best offensive teams to have 4 guys who are true bucket getters in a vaccuum.

If you can piece together the right whole, then functionally there can absolutely be 4, or 5, or more in the context you’ve built. But that has to stem from finding the right mix.

I think UH has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to having absolute dawgs :dog2:. And that’s certainly never a bad place to start lol. It buys you a lot of wiggle room and margin for error in terms of finding the right off mix.
