I know y’all got mad at me for saying this earlier, but after thinking about it more, I stand by it.
We really need Mercy to be “that guy” for this team to be great. The kind of scorer where any true 1-on-1 matchup is basically automatic points.
Here’s why:
- Dedan: Undersized and not the best shooter. His biggest strength is his passing, and he’d thrive with more freedom of movement and better passing lanes.
- McCarty: Doesn’t have much off the dribble, but his rebounding, shooting, and defense make him a heavy-minutes guy.
- JoJo: JoJo is JoJo offensively.
- Del Rocco: Hasn’t shown he can consistently dominate high-major competition yet.
The missing piece that makes everything work is Mercy becoming a feared offensive threat.
If he’s dangerous enough to consistently draw the opponent’s best defender AND force help defense, everything opens up.
Dedan gets more breathing room and passing lanes as defenders help on Mercy. McCarty gets less defensive attention and more opportunities to find open shots. Everyone benefits.
But if Mercy plays like he did against Montana Tech, only attacking when he’s open or when his defender gets caught on a screen, even against weaker defenders, I think our offense will struggle this year.
We need Mercy to be aggressive, create his own offense, and become someone defenses genuinely fear in isolation. That changes everything for this team.

As for Mercy, agree we need him to make the jump to close to elite basket getter.

i think his point was highlighint the great defenders (and rebounders) on houston… dedan at lsu was not a good defender/rebounder

we are bullying and killling most teams on the boards… teams with bad D will leave guys like mccarty open, of give dedan pure iso with a weak defender he can blow by… was mroe when we meet arizona and iowa st etc…

If you are going to say, our defense could be even better or one of the best of all time, then you have to include the players that are gonna be on the court.
