Thoughts on Utah blaming the big 12 for their declining viewership and saying we need to fix it?

Utah Fans are delusional! LOL! It’s actually comical.

They should try winning the Big 12 and their viewership might go up

They should’ve just stuck with the Pac 12.

Utah grieving that the B1G did not want them manifests itself by Utah blaming the B12 for their lack of ratings.

Was hoping, for personal reasons, that UH @ WVU would be a weekday game. Such is life.

The TV viewers that were watching the Utah games were actually fans of USC, Oregon, UCLA, etc. Those fans are now watching B1G games. Utah didn’t make the cut for a reason.

I think Oregon, usc, and Washington really inflated their numbers

I doubt this is the reason.

The NUMBER ONE most important factor in viewership is the network/time slot. One needs to look no further than the swing between Okie St and Iowa State. Seven to ten years ago OSU was consistently competitive and received network and time slot priority. Meanwhile, Iowa State was awful and 4 to 5 games every year were on ESPN + or other 3rd tier networks. As a result, OSUs viewship numbers were high while ours were terrible

The last few years, particularly last year, Iowa States viewership was high while OSUs was moribund. Yes, nobody wants to watch a team that sucks but the highest draws were all network TV games, with the best coming in good timeslots.

Obviously there are behemoths that always draw well, but thats also because they have great network exposure and prime time slots. The key is to get good enough to be relevent and have your conference and tv partmers prioritize games. Utahs numbers have tanked because they have largely stunk. Get better, get better time slots and the numbers will rebound.

I havent been to Provo and would have to defer to you about the vibe of the city/town. While Lawrence is definitely a college “town” in vibe, its closer to KC than Provo is to SLC. More or less, Lawrence is part of the KC metro as its only 32 miles from KCMO (downtown) and maybe 20 from the I435/I70 junction. Even Ames is closer to Des Moines than Provo is to SLC, though Id hardly consider Ames as an extension of the metro (even though the northern reaches of the DM suburbs encroach closer every year).

The difference is that from SLC to Provo you are driving through the city the entire time. When I drove from Lawrence to KC I saw plenty of farm land but your point stands.

The green route is faster to get to Provo from where I live than the red routes, even though the speed limits are far slower.

That is one trip I won’t be making, especially on a Friday.

I actually quite like weekday games for the exposure and night game aspect. ISU spent decades being buried on Saturdays at 11AM and often not even on TV.

Not dismissing any of ya’lls complaints, i get them. Just saying it’s generally not a problem for us folk. Keep em coming

(Edit: I was more talking about UCF, but driving to Provo would also probably be harder w/ a Friday game)

Small side track, for those who watch the Chosen, goshen Utah on that map is home to the Jerusalem set

Oh 100%. And Lawrence on to topeka is the same way and very close, you can cover that whole stretch fairly quickly. You gotta drive from KC to Manhattan tho to get the full context of the KC to Lawrence thing.

Definitely its own little island, but like from China to Taiwan. Manhattan might as well be China to Hawaii. It’s way out there and even the landscape changes entirely. It’s wild.

Yup. Not connected at all. It’s 17 miles of uniterrupted corn to Ankeny that will beat the notion out of you quite quickly. That being said, I agree with both of ya’lls assessments of KC to Lawrence, Ames to DSM. For whatever reason Lawrence IS way more KC than Ames is DSM. They both have similarities, but that’s just a fact and it’s hard to say exactly why. Maybe because KC just has a bigger and wider pull in terms of orbit? Idk.

and I also agree w/ the Salt Lake to Provo being all connected thing, tho I haven’t experienced the last one firsthand.

A few years ago I wouldn’t have thought Provo was connected at all. It does seem like it’s way off on its own unless you know or really look into it. Not sure why, it’s probably just the uniqueness of BYU if I had to guess. But the default guess just gives off that vibe for whatever reason.
