8 Teams

With a guaranteed spot in the playoffs, they will always put the G5 team #8 as they have always perceived G5 teams are weaker than P5s.

If G5s are guaranteed a spot, the G5 talent pool will get a lot better because every team now has a path to the playoffs and every G5 team will tell their players and recruits, their goal is to win a national championship.

I pointed this out on Twitter this past weekend:

NFL - 32 teams play 16 games for a 14 spot playoff
NCAA FCS - 127 teams play 12 games for a 24 spot playoff
NBA - 30 teams play 82 games for a 16 spot playoff
NCAAM - 250 teams play 24-27 games for a 68 spot playoff

NCAA FBS - 130 teams play 11-13 games for a 4 spot playoff

I think you meant to say . . .
NCAA FBS-P5 - 65 teams play 11-13 games for a 4 spot playoff

NCAA FBS-G5 - 65 teams play 11-13 games for a 0 spot playoff (no such thing as a playoff for you)

And if we do get an 8 team playoff, it will be 1 spot for 65 teams.

There has been lots of calls for the 8 team playoff including Jimbo Fisher, Urban Meyer, writers and others. A lot of these people did not want to expand previously but now they are changing their minds.

Eight teams. Expand the playoff, and don’t think twice about it. Coming from someone who loves football in all shapes and forms: An extra round will create more unique matchups between programs that likely will not play each other in a given season.

Not just more football. More captivating matchups.

Those eight teams should be decided as such: The winner of all five Power Five conference championship games get a spot in the bracket. The top Group of Five team gets a spot as well, and this one is frankly a long time coming. The remaining two vacancies will be awarded as at-large bids.

We don’t need a committee for this. Resurrect the BCS rankings, or something similar, and let it do the heavy lifting when it comes to the Group of Five teams and at-large bids. Also, let the BCS 2.0— the working title —seed the tournament.
