A little concerned about our offense

No one here is saying that improvement isn’t needed or expected. That’s a strawman.

I believe Willie Fritz would be happy to win every game 7-0, as long as we kept the ball for 55 minutes.

I remember playing against his Tulane teams and getting the sense that “it’s not fair”… if our offense went 3 & out, his team would have the ball for an entire quarter at a time. Fritz’s opponents don’t get many chances to score.

Yes I agree that the offense looked concerning but will concede that it’s the first game of the season and a lot of moving parts are still trying to find their proper rotation. If they didn’t open up the playbook it’s not because they are trying to withhold things from future opponents it’s more so because they aren’t ready to run it live IMO.

The Rice game should show significant improvement but I’m not going to raise the concern flag until after the Colorado game. If we look the same vs the Buffs then we’re in for another very long season and hoping to just get to 5 maybe 6 wins.

That said I’m optimistic about this season and think we’re going to see huge leaps from game 2 and into game 3. Throwing on my 8-4 hat until at least week 4.

The offense already looks so much better than it did last year.

Think overall the same could be said about Sampson and he seems to be successful with that approach.

I’m trying not to overreact but the o-line left me wondering. I was also told SFA played their second-string QB. It’s always nice to get a shut out though. Go beat Rice!

Vidlak is a multi-year starter

But yes, they did play their QB2 when the game was out of reach

This is why I hated the idea of hiring grandpa Fritz who operates a run based offense.

If we get down by more than 14+, any chances of a comeback will be tough to overcome.

Ever since Fritz was at Tulane, he lost to every one of our HCs in his years at Tulane.
Herman, Applewhite, and Holgorsen.

Well we just don’t need to get down then.

I’m less concerned about that this year than I was last year. We’ve got a capable QB and receivers. I think we can operate a two minute offense, but hopefully we spend more time running the ten minute offense and frustrating the hell out of our opponents.

We will go up against high profile offenses eventually.
Better hope our defense and offense can keep up.

We have some valid concerns about our offense, but from what I’ve seen yesterday, most B12 teams are in the same boat.

Sounds similar to the offensive strategy Iowa has been using for a long time.

Did the OL have any holding calls?

Watching a lot of teams this weekend it seems like defenses are way ahead of offenses on the whole.

Which OL are you talking about? CWF used this game as a means of determining who fit together the best and used a bunch of different players in different combinations. We were playing SFA and he knew we would win and used the game for what it was for, to figure out who is to be used where.

We have a whole new group on the OL and getting the best combinations is better done in a real game like the SFA game. He has told us all along that he would use the 1st 3 games as a means of determining who we should go with when we enter conference play.

I’m sure if we just wanted to run the score up we could have but played a very vanilla offense to keep the score down (he doesn’t like to embarrass outmatched OOC teams) and to not show all of our cards before we need to.

Tcoog, can’t “comeback”? Go watch the Tulane CottonBiwl win over the University of Southern California. …and walk in to Willie’s office and watch it with him after calling him “Grandpa Fritz. You’re a Hater and a TROLL…

Square peg in a round hole type of play calling
Describes the situation exactly. We had all square pegs and coach had to find a way to put them in round holes . . . . .

Paper straw man . . . . .

When you are trying to have a balanced offense and the run game is inconsistent then drives are going to stall. Add in the fact that SFA is a playoff caliber/Top 25 FCS team with a lot of them from the city of Houston and I’m sure they came out with a lot of fire and desire for a team that ultimately still left the stadium disappointed.

I’ll say this. If we are going to continue to run a balanced attack on offense and if our run game remains somewhat inconsistent then I encourage the coaching staff to take a lot more deep shots through the air. I love that Weigman came out trying to hit a homerun on the first play. I feel like if he hit that throw and our guy created the necessary separation then it could have changed the entire feel of the offense.

Keep taking those shots and putting the defense under pressure. 20 plus runs a game with an inconsistent run game combined with a bunch of flat routes is what can lead to a stagnant and non explosive offense
