AAC teams versus in-state "P5" schools

This horse has been beaten many times over but seeing the East Carolina/NC State score today prompted me to investigate some comparisons with fellow AAC conference foes and their similar “struggles” to play in-state P5 teams.

Worth noting, UH and UCF are uniquely different in their inability to schedule these schools. Additional analysis is certainly possible.

Using records from 1996 (after SWC) through 2018:

Temple:
U of Pittsburgh - 10 times since 1996 with the most recent in 2012 (2-8)

Actually we have played TT 4 times since 1996 and are 1-3 in those games.

2 here and 2 there.

Made the TT and UT corrections.

I think it would be interesting to see TCU games as they have played well in the time period you are reviewing.

We’re 0-5 against them since 1996. 4 of those games where when we were both in CUSA and the last game was the Texas Bowl game that Briles left us prior to back in 2007. We haven’t played them since they moved to the Big12 (and probably won’t unless it’s another bowl game).

Thanks for the stats! I thought TCU held an edge but my main point is that as A Texas team they have been a force to reckon with and should be included.

To that very point about TCU, Texas universities uniquely (although Florida and FSU are closest) collude to stonewall nearby non-P5 schools that are a possible challenge to their power/control of an area. I thought Texans loved free markets and competition? LOL

Similarly, I’m sure we’d find in other states that P5 schools play their non-P5 counterparts far more frequently than in TX or FL.

USC played Fresno State last night and Fresno State played UCLA last year.

Texans do. The Texas government does not.

I no longer care about playing any of these A5 Texas schools
Texas state…yes and north Texas too and SMU but no to rice…
Rice has never been our friend either, a lot of negative history there if you care to look
The AAC is trending up real fast right now and if we can win in Norman tonight it will just make the public perception of the AAC even better and ours
If we beat #4 Oklahoma tonight mybe we will make AP #15…hope so anyway

I disagree that “the AAC is trending up real fast” but I agree that if we beat OU we will be somewhere in the top 24.

Ok but I’ll go a step further and say the MWC is also trending up
There is more room for fan base growth in all the g5 conferences than any of the A5 conferences
You just need to take off your Baylor bear glasses to see what’s happening

I don’t think the collusion aspect to keep teams down is a strong as people think. With the Big 12 there are only 3 OOC opponents. At least with TCU, Patterson seems to really like playing one FCS team every year, then there is SMU every year (100 year rivalry), leaving only one game to get exposure in other parts of the country.

Personally, I think all FCS games should be marked as not counting towards bowl eligibility and only be allowed 1 per 2 years. I wish TCU would move the SMU game to every other year and mix in UH in between.

Strike two. I’m not a Baylor Bear. My grandkids and a few close friends call me Bear.
Strike three. “The MWC is trending up”.
You are out but I agree there is more room in the G5 but who wants to be G5? Not me!!!
