AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sterling Brown ∙ Sr. ∙ G ∙ SMU ∙ Maywood, Ill.
Brown earns the first player of the week honor of his career after leading #rv/rv SMU to a 2-0 week, giving the Mustangs 16 wins in their last 17 games. The senior averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists on the week, opening with a 15-point, nine-rebound effort against East Carolina. At Tulsa, Brown posted a career-best 27 points, going 9-of-15 from the floor as SMU improved to 10-1 in The American. The win was Brown’s 99th with SMU, extending his program record.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Malik Fitts ∙ Fr. ∙ F ∙ USF ∙ Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
Moving back into the USF starting lineup, Fitts posted one of the best performances by a Bull this season, erupting for 29 points and 11 rebounds against Memphis. Fitts’ output was the most by a USF player this season, and the double-double was the first of the freshman’s career. On the week, Fitts averaged 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds across two games.

WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Gary Clark ∙ Jr. ∙ F ∙ Cincinnati ∙ Clayton, N.C.
Clark helped #14/14 Cincinnati extend its winning streak to 14 games, averaging a double-double 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds. The junior registered his fifth double-double of the season with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 11 rebounds in Cincinnati’s win over UConn.

Damyean Dotson ∙ Sr. ∙ G ∙ Houston ∙ Houston
In Houston’s lone game last week, Dotson exploded for a career-high 31 points as the Cougars downed UCF. Dotson’s output was the fourth-highest in The American this season, while his seven three-pointers marked a career best for the senior.

Dedric Lawson ∙ So. ∙ F ∙ Memphis ∙ Memphis, Tenn.
Lawson averaged 28.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in Memphis’ road swing through Florida. The sophomore opened the week with 29 points and nine rebounds at USF before setting an American record in going 14-of-14 at the free-throw line en route to a 28-point effort at UCF.

Kyle Washington ∙ Jr. ∙ F ∙ Cincinnati ∙ Champlin, Minn.
Washington notched a career-best 27 points in #14/14 Cincinnati’s victory over UConn, the Bearcats’ 22nd consecutive win at Fifth Third Arena. The lefty averaged a team-best 18.5 points as Cincinnati remained unbeaten in The American.

Kentrell Barkley ∙ So. ∙ G/F ∙ East Carolina ∙ Durham, N.C.
Barkley tallied his sixth double-double of the season for East Carolina, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Pirates collected a win over Tulane. On the week, Barkley averaged 13.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game.


Mike says that the Coogs are the 3rd best team in the conference right now.

It was a busy week on the hardwood in American Hoops, as Cincinnati and SMU both went 2-0 to help set the stage for a massive matchup at Moody on Sunday.

Over on the women’s side, the conference received a pair of national accolades this week as Temple and UConn players were cited for major awards.

The country witnessed the most impressive come back in super bowl history as the new England patriots were victorious in Houston on Sunday night against the Atlanta Falcons. And… the member schools of the American Athletic Conference played a small part.

The Softball season gets underway this week with all seven American teams in action.
