About that UT Land in Houston

Seems as though UT still owns this 300+ acres. John Whitmire made the bold promise at the 2023 Houston Mayoral Forum on Parks that if he is elected mayor he will convince UT to donate this land to the Parks Department and create another urban park in Houston.

But this guy is longhorn according to some posters.

Whitmire got both his BA and JD from UH.

He’s a coog.

But don’t they have land in Sugarland, next to the UH sugarland campus?

Schedule us for a 30 year home and home and they can have sugarland

FIFY.

He never received a JD. He took the bar at a time when an exception existed for members of the legislature to take the test that didn’t require law school completion.

He did indeed attend law school at UH for a time, but never graduated.

Mr. Whitmire deliver on your promise.

I listened to the video here but couldn’t recall where he said but I believe y’all if you said he said it.

It’s a great angle to put pressure on UT bc it’s donate the land for park space here and UT is doing zero with it spending 10 mil or more in property taxes per yr.

If he can get this done and crime under control , he’s going to be a great mayor. If he tries , I think he gets both done.

Why would UT pay tax? They are the government. They don’t pay tax dollars, they use tax dollars.

Same as UH.

They don’t pay taxes, that is why they will sit on it for decades.

They want a UT-Houston.

What matters is that Whitmire made a promise. He has to deliver and expel mad cows u located in Houston.
Make no mistakes friend. This unlawful land is theirs. This land does not have a stop n go or a Gastro Pub. It is empty for a purpose.

From other threads, you just seem very angry and conclusive about your determinations. Well then, just be this kind of fan. Guess we need more of you.

I will change how I feel about it when mad cows u located in austin and Houston give us full access to the PUF.
Here is what is concerning. We/U of H is at the mercy of a new governor that will be closer to mad cows u located in Austin and Houston.
The same so called state flag institution could sell the land tomorrow and they will be down with it. Facts tell us to never trust them. Why should we trust them? Give us one good reason.

It’s a competitive environment. Maybe UH should buy the land.

Dude they’re not going to build UT Houston. It would take multiple generations. And to what end? I think the state legislature, who just awarded endowments to UH, TT etc, have no mind for this.

They’re living rent free in your head.

Whatever. I don’t believe in UT conspiracy. Carry on.

What you should believe is that UT and A&M have a head start, but that’s obvious. Stop pretending that UH should have the same privilege. You need to earn it, which is what we’re trying to do. Just like TT and others.

Dude they are not selling the land.
I do love the dude.

Then just buy the damn land if you care so much. There’s a market. Otherwise, it’s a cesspool of toxic waste that you could not even farm. UT would probably lose money on the sale if that makes you happy.

I’ll bet they can’t find a single buyer for this land in the current rate environment. Not one. That’s the real issue.

Here you go. From the Chronicle. They may have paid off an alum, but now they’re pretty much screwed.

"They paid a premium for some very poor land,” said Whitmire, noting that some of the land is environmentally unsafe and contaminated. “There’s a reason why in Houston, Texas, you have 300 acres, undeveloped and untouched by the private sector.”

McRaven, who acknowledged the land was an abandoned oil field, said before calling off the project that no environmental conditions would prevent full development of the property.

That will make a perfect place for a kid’s park!

Many base their opinion on his absolute berating text conversation about how he treated Dr. Khator and her attempt to move forward with the living on campus initiative for freshmen.

There were so many exceptions in her proposal but the way he talked to her was beyond disrespectful.

It was a “stay in your lane”, “nobody views UH as a destination college” type of tone throughout the conversation.

He was still the better option than SJL but if you haven’t read the conversation (public information) i highly recommend you see how our mayor elect acted.

The UT land was purchased from a donor at inflated prices. The purchase process followed none of the University of Texas protocols for purchasing land. It was a fraudulent end run for the SOLE PURPOSE of starting UT-Houston. UT is in every major Texas city except one…drum roll please…Houston.

They need to deed the land to the University of Houston. We will sell it when the market conditions are sufficient to create a return. UT should not own that land.

UT has a large presence in Houston already.
