According to this, its very close with the ACC making a little more once you factor in all of their revenue sources:
Good. Maybe they’ll extend their grant of rights to 2046
Still hope Yormark gets some private equity to put us ahead. Not sure if that initiative is moving forward or not.
Glad the Big 12 isn’t bound by the ACC’s outrageous grant of rights.
If private equity gives us an advantage over the B1G and SEC initially, they’ll just follow suit.
I’d rather no private equity in the equation if that is the case.
I’m not sure it’ll ever give us an advantage over the B1G or SEC, simply because the gap is probably too big to make up.
But I’d LOVE for it to give us an advantage, however temporary, over the ACC.
75% of the SEC schools will take a hit because of NIL.
As of right now, the NIL funds are separate from the media payouts…you can’t use those funds tor NIL today.
Most of the SEC schools are low endowment, in small or poor markets, and they have many T-shirt fans that donate very little.
Up until the current era, the SEC were able to get ahead because 1) they made more from the networks and 2) their attendance revenue kept their athletic programs profitable.
NOW, schools like LSU/Ole Miss/ Mississippi/ Arkansas/ Oklahom, etc. have to raise their own money via donations or corporate NIL deals.
What could be a wild card is if their NFL player alums donate huge NIL $$ back to their school
The SEC still has those money from networks and attendance advantages over all but the B1G though.
As for NIL, don’t underestimate schools like Ole Miss. They raised over $10 million for NIL last season.
Do you like UofH to compete in the NIL era? It’s gonna costs a fortune in perpetual payments to keep our roster from hitting the portal.
As I’ve said before, I don’t know that we’ll ever be a big NIL school, UNLESS we end up getting a sugar daddy like this recent Texas Tech billionaire, Knight at Oregon, or the SMU oil barons.
BUT…
Being in the Houston area, we couldn’t be more IDEALLY suited to take advantage of the transfer portal.
We can tell the Greater Houston area recruit that played a year or two in the Sun Belt or AAC, and made all conference there, that they can always come back home to Houston, play in front of their family and friends, and play “power” conference ball, competing for a “big time” conference title.
That’s an advantage in the transfer portal that few other schools have to the same degree.
That may be the key to overcoming any NIL disadvantage we might have.
yes…we are KILLING it in basketball with a mix of both buckets (donations + corporate). We are attracting both top NIL transfers, like our PG from Oklahoma and recruits (currently #2 recruiting class
Once we get the football program back to H-Town Takeover level excitement, I full expect us to be one of the NIL powers. We just to build that excitement to get the momentum
they ONLY have bucket #1 though…we can tap into BOTH buckets.
They will run out of gas raising private funds
As has been explained to you many times in the past.
It’s easy to come up with money for a few basketball recruits each year, relatively speaking. Even UConn can do that.
Coming up with enough NIL to sign 25-30 football players on par with the top SEC and B1G schools, OTOH…is A WHOLE DIFFERENT ANIMAL.
Much harder. We are NOT “killing it” at that, according to most reports.
Basketball is WAY more competitive than football…
More schools vying for fewer select talent
Football has role players + select high $$ positions (QBS, LBS. Oline, etc.)
You can build a strong nucleus + selectively add NIL pieces in football with more players being interchangeable (low cost)
For basketball, you better pay to keep your roster intact or for high NIL $$ transfers or recruits.
…UH is absolutely killing it in Bucket #2 funds…ExxonMobil, Gallery Furniture, Car Dealerships, Memorial Hermann, Chevron, multiple law firms and restaurants, etc. have ALL thrown crazy $$$ at UH athletics and players.
Those deals aren’t bucket #1 so they aren’t counted as part of a bucket #1 “collective”
Uhhhhhh…not sure where you are getting your next to last paragraph from.
Not saying those people/entities haven’t pitched it…but it probably ain’t as great as you think.
Reports suggest that UH is NOT a football NIL powerhouse.
Not saying that couldn’t change, but it hasn’t happened yet.
The transfer portal is likely our best bet to stay on top.
we aren’t a bucket #1 powerhouse YET but we’ve been very active in Bucket #2 (marketing NIL deals and/or $$$ for UH Athletics)
Again, that’s mostly BASKETBALL, where it only takes enough money to buy a few recruits per year.
In football…we are definitely NOT considered an NIL power…under ANY bucket.
no…many of those are football also.
Memorial Hermann gave mad $$ for the FOOTBALL operations building.
but yes…we are KILLING It in Basketball…top 5 NIL school!
Giving money for facilities is NOT NIL.
Tilman has given lots of money for facilities, med school, etc., but that’s not NIL.
Doesn’t count.
And all your NIL examples except one from above were for BASKETBALL, not football.
you were bragging that Ole Miss had $10 million in their pot.
WE made ONE MILLION from a single corporate NIL sponsor, Gallery Furniture plus many more
Again…FOOTBALL???
UH is simply NOT considered an NIL powerhouse in THAT sport.
Not saying that couldn’t change, but currently, NO.
Under ANY “bucket.”
