All-Time Best QBs in UofH History

Case Keenum is the most prolific QB in UofH history and my personal favorite because I was a student at the time. Regardless, Andre Ware won the most prestigious trophy in all of sports and is in the college football Hall of Fame, which will last the test of time! You can argue that both QB put UofH back on the map in college football.

Where will Conner Weigman stack up after his stellar career? The future is bright in the QB room w Keisean Henderson being the most decorated high-school recruit of all-time at UofH and ranked as the #1 dual threat QB prospect in the country!

#1… period

Let me see the other Heismans that we have…

The better question is where does Greg Ward rank…?

So nice to have him behind Wiggy for a year!

Moon Mullins……Danny Davis……

Different systems, but great in their time.

You are asking me to choose the UH GOAT QBs I saw in person:

  • D.C. Nobles and Gary “Moon” Mullins, who ran the veer to perfection.
  • Danny Davis, who led UH to an improbable SWC Co-Championship it’s first year of football membership and a Cotton Bowl victory in 1976-1977.
  • Terry Elston, the best full-time, non-starting QB in UH history, who led come-from-behind victories against Texas A&M, at Kyle Field, and Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl.
  • Andre Ware, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1989, and set NCAA passing records.
  • David Klingler, who broke most of Ware’s passing records.
  • Case Keenum, who still owns seven NCAA passing records.
  • Greg Ward, who wanted to be a QB at UH, but was used as a punt returner and wide receiver, before beating out John O’Korn for the starting QB position, and led UH to a Peach Bowl upset victory against Florida St.

Sorry boss, I can’t decide.

Gary is the most electric QB to ever play for UofH. You can’t teach speed! I will never forget his freshman year when he returned a punt, then lined up under center on the next play. He was fun to watch and helped secure our Peach Bowl victory over FSU!

That’s okay… a committee already decided for us…

The wild thing about it is that Andre Ware is the 1st player to win the award while facing probation. We were not on tv that year! That’s incredible if you think about it. It was win on paper with prolific run and shoot stats.

I laughed when I read this, thinking you were referring to Gary Mullins. Mullins ran the veer to perfection, but no one would mistake him for Carl Lewis.

I know the joke about referring to Greg Ward as Gary, but with Gary Mullins in the mix, probably best to hold off the Gary reference.

Best QB for me to witness for UH is a toss up between Ware and Keenum.

I was in school while Andre was playing. Not only we were on probation but basically every single SWC schools pushed hard to make sure Andre would not win the Heisman. Keep in mind that uta and the ncaa got in bed together to get us on probation. This is what happens when the local so called blue bloods want to exterminate you because you have the potential to be a National champion.
The chance that Andre would win the Heisman were slim. We were not on tv, on probation and the excuse was Andre’s numbers are because it is a “system” Again this is what happens when a school like U of H DISTURBS the status quo. The vote was very close and at the voters realized they could not ignore Andre’s numbers.

In 1990 David Klingler’s numbers should have won him the Heisman.
Again, we were on probation, tv blackouts…and the b.s. excuse that it was the system. The anti U of H worked that year to perfection. David finished 5th which was an insult to the entire U of H football program.

You talk about on the map. DD cut a swarth through the SWC and never looked back. I’m convinced he’s partly responsible for the other old SWC schools hating us. The Veer rumbled under Davis.

It took them a decade to figure that offense out. Imagine two guys with the ball at the same time and…BAM!!

True, if Davis does not get injured in 1977, Coogs may have won the SWC 4 straight instead of 3 of 4. As Chis documents very well, we got another kangaroo court probation in 77 for the Shepherd recruitment.

To this day the ncaa will never admit it. All college football woes lead to the ncaa.

What about Kevin Kolb, who dragged us out of the gutter?

Bobby Clatterbuck was our career leading passer for 10 years. Amazingly he’s still top 25.
He led UH to its 1st conference championship, 1st bowl game, and 1st appearance in the polls (although only for 1 week).
He was the 1st UH player to play in an NFL game and 1st NFL champion.

Bonus point: He also played for UH’s 1st World Series team.

UH GOAT…1 and 1a Case Keenum and Greg Ward, Jr. That said, if I had one final drive to win the game, I’m going with Greg Ward, Jr. Tough as nails, savvy, smart, he can throw it, run it, extend plays, and he’s got that Joe Montana vibe of staying cool when everything around him is burning to the ground. GWJr = wins big games!
