Alumni license plate frame

Yes, if more than half of the “TEXAS” or “The Lone Star State” is covered.

That’s in the Transportation Code.

Wait, so if “The Lone Star State” is covered by 50% or more (which it seems like it would be when looking at the license plate frame where it says “Houston”), then that is also illegal? I thought it only applied to the word “TEXAS” in addition to the numbers and letters of the license plate. Not “The Lone Star State” words.

I understand how the law reads. My question is have you heard of anyone actually getting a ticket for it?

Is it a primary or a secondary violation?

Hey listen.

I’ve seen people pulled over for it, and then the cop smells weed inside, the car gets searched with probable cause, dope galore gets found, and people go to jail without passing go or collecting $200.

The citation is the least of their worries at that point.

That reminds me of back in the day getting pulled over for the license plate light being out and having to answer 100 questions about where I was going and why I was out that late at night.

I can understand getting pulled over in a small town in rural Texas, but it seems that here in Houston, HPD doesn’t really seem to care much about even enforcing traffic laws.

If I’m not mistaken, they recently got rid of their traffic stop quotas policy.

West U police pulled me over for that once at around midnight. I had been working and just left Walgreens from picking up some medications, totally sober. He didn’t keep me long and just warned me but I’m sure he was just using that as probable cause to hopefully find something else.

I’ve seen the exact same scenario I described with the license plate cover above unfold with license plate lights as well!

Prosecuted many cases like that.

They use it as an excuse to pull you over to look for other probable cause or violations…
