Annise Parker calls for Tilman Fertitta to convert the Dome into a casino!

I’m in the process of moving to New Orleans. It has its issues in spots but there are some great places too.

Yea, I don’t think gaming is necessarily the cause for any “dumpy” areas of New Orleans.

Actually, it is Harris County that pays for the Astrodome, not the City of Houston.

Could that money be better spent in Harris County? Sure, there’s an argument for that.

I do believe she was a supporter of our mission at that time to gain Tier 1 status and may have offered her support to fundraising in general. I don’t recall for sure what all she was able to accomplish with fixing the roads through and around the University. I do remember that being the high profile problem at the time. But that has nothing to do with the Dome.

A lot of people can’t shake their Katrina refugee biases.

From what I can tell N.O. is much smaller, but very revitalized in many areas.

Tillman owns the Golden Nugget - he would have to take a significant loss cause it would kill revenues in damn near 2 states overnight (Mississippi and Louisiana) where he has properties

I do not see how it would impact the Mississippi location as anyone in Texas who wanted to go to a casino would have stopped long before in Lake Charles. The only one that would have an impact is the Lake Charles location. As people in NO and points east have other options and points west would go to Houston over Lake Charles.

I mentioned this already but one question he would have to ask - should gambling be legalized in Texas - is will I be better off owning the casino in Houston and Lake Charles even if they cannibalize each other OR am I better off sticking to where I’m already invested.

Yes, I think so. It’s a cool spot. We are excited about it.

The biggest question is “How will this casino benefit the community?”

I’m willing to bet the cons outweigh the risks.

Having lived in NOLA, the #1 sport in NOLA is football. The #2 sport is murder.

But seriously, they do baseball well here too.

I don’t gamble but I support Texas legalizing casino gambling. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick is a roadblock.

Love it Jason, awesome post.
New Orleans is still dirty and highly dangerous.

The entire state of Louisiana is probably the worst-run state in the entire country, despite having direct access to a plethora of resources

I recently moved to NOLA. If what you mostly know about is bourbon street, etc, you don’t know much. It reminds me of how everyone is an expert on Chicago, LA, NYC, etc. People don’t know nearly as much as they think they do.

I haven’t been here long but it’s a pretty great place so far. City Park is awesome. I love the people.
