Another $10M Loan to Bail Out Athletics

Gotta pay off those credit cards first…

Excellent post Emmanuel. The media wants us to believe that all is rosy with college sports. The exact opposite is happening. We have a clear case of “The tree hiding the forest”
Some are saying that this is why the p2’s are needed. Make the p2 “exclusive” and kill most other programs. That way the p2 is truly an nfl aaa…without the nfl spending a dime.

I would believe that the late March and early May TV appearances add quite a bit to the athletic department and put BB a positive instead of a negative toward the athletic budget.

But but but, we need more “traditional” students.

What exactly were the transition costs? Were bids placed in some areas to ensure lowest costs were received in some areas or we just stated spending to say we’re in the big 12 to keep up with the Joneses

Let’s put it this way. We have done more with less for decades. We have some great friends that have helped. I can’t even think where we would be without them.
TDECU stadium was a bargain, huge bargain. Best stadium anywhere for what it cost. Besides the possible expansion it can be improved; which, is great.

Dr Khator said at the meeting that enrollment at the main campus was up 3% and that we had 48,000 FRESHMAN applications for enrollment with only 6600 spots available for the fall. It was also mentioned that we haven’t raised tuition in 3 years which I still say we should increase to help fund the athletic department budget

THIS is how we leverage our demand and accept the majority of Freshmen wiling to live on campus their first year.

With a proven and steady track record of Freshmen living on campus, developers will start to see that developing a supporting University District adjacent to campus.

Just like all of the other P4 campuses!

I get a lot of hate here but I’m only echoing Renu Khator’s vision of turning us into a Traditional University.

We are headed in the right direction…but sill have a lot more work to do!

The actual UH campus is basically “land locked” Developers have a huge role to play. “You build it. They will come”
We can compare our campus to others:

At 667 acres U of H by definition is somewhat limited.
Now let’s look at:
WV: 2,737
teetech: 1,839
ASU: 1,550
Utah: 1.500
OSU: 1,489
UCF: 1,420
Baylor: 1,000
Kansas: 950
K-State: 660
Colorodo: 600
BYU: 560
ISU: 490
Arizona: 400
TCU: 302
Cinci: 253

By state
Texas
atm: 5,200
uta: 431
SMU: 250
rice o roni: 300

California:
Stanford: 8,180
Cal: 1,232
UCLA: 419
USC: 226

Alabama:
Auburn: 1,841
Bama: 1,400

Florida
UF: 2,000
FSU: 485.7
Miami: 239

Georgia:
Georgia: 760
GT: 400

Now show how many are in the center of a world class city, with a population bigger than some whole states.

A lot…

Seattle, Austin, Los Angeles, Columbus, Miami, Raleigh, Boston, Chicago, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Orlando, Ft. Worth-Dallas, Cincinnati are just some of the MAJOR LEAGUE cities that also contain a P4 University.

STOP making excuses!!!

Orlando? Nashville? Raleigh? Austin? Columbus? Houston outnumbers them combined. Are you serious, or just so delusional that you can’t see the facts? I’m surprised you didn’t include the global city of Tuscaloosa.

So what’s left are the few handful of schools in the same setting as UH with the same problems with their athletics, how’s their attendance doing when they don’t win? GaTech, Pitt, UCLA, Boston College? Not exactly the type of athletic programs that you envy, is it?

Those are MAJOR LEAGUE cities…they are Comparable

Also, Remember Houston is a huge city Square miles wise…we only have about 600k inside the loop which is about the populations of rhe cities listed.

Next excuse?

There you have it guys, Houston is small town of 600,000!

There you have Norbert didn’t read what i was saying.

Our lsnd area is huge compared to other cities.

UH is located inside the loop and THAT area is comparable in both area and population to other Major League Pro Cities in the P4.

Its called catchment area.

They can support Univetsity Districts…why can’t we?

This is total acreage, not the acreage of the main campus. This list includes ag fields and off site facilities.

I would hope that you’re right, but other than a reimbursement of their travel expenses, I’m not aware that UH (or any other Big 12 school invited to play in a post season BB tournament) would collect anything more than an equal 1/16th share of the media broadcast revenues generated by their post season tourney appearance.

It is not magic. Houston athletics being self sufficient, the responsibility is on the fans. They have been making lemonades for a while.
