Heard on the radio how the disgruntled AAC schools could go independent to solve their problem.
Don’t laugh.

That has about as much of a chance of happening as I have of breaking 80. After a long hiatus from golf, right now I would just love to break 100 again. In my best years I would shoot in the 80’s with my lowest ever being 82. But I will be 80 in a couple of months and shooting in the 80’s again just aint going to happen. The only bright spot about my muscle loss resulting in distance loss is that I don’t go as far out of the fairway.
Put aside any probabilities and tell me whether you’d like this arrangement or not. Would you like this better or shoot an 80? Probabilities notwithstanding. ![]()
These 8 champs plus 16 at large would make a nice CFP, in my humble estimation.
If BYU and Notre Dame, the 2 schools that can afford being Independent have said it’s a pain in the ass at times then there’s no way Memphis or USF can do it for long.
What if they had company?
When there’s nothing left during a bye week
Love it!
No CCGs and a 24 CFP changes things.
I would love it for traveling to road games, but unfortunately, common sense has flown the coop, and is not likely to return.
If this could actually happen, I would like it a lot more than breaking 80, although I really don’t like being in a conference with UT who would again think they owned it.
The regionality ship has sailed.
Yes!
Where do I contribute?
We did it for years…
One of the problems with dreaming these scenarios up is that it falls into “systemic incompatibility.”
Example: UT is so entirely and structurally elitist that you can never coherently place them in a conference with us. They would threaten lawsuits and ultimately, given no other option, they would go independent.
I know it’s an excursion in “what if” but you stand a better chance of playing a game on an asteroid.
Geography tends to boost rivalries and minimizing travel costs could help boost attendance and probably TV eyeballs too, I’m thinking.
Also, Pacific Coast teams in B1G is just flat weird as is SMU in ACC.
Plus, having 10 teams each means round robin regular seasons (everybody playing everybody) and still leaves room for 3 out of conference games. It would uncomplicate scheduling and more head-to-head games to uncomplicate ranking. What’s not to like about that!?!
No sense worrying about geography, old time rivalries or travel anymore. It isnt like schools are going to go back to the way it was, because they arent. How it is, is what we have, and i doubt its going to change much. ACC schools want to get in BIG or SEC. Good luck, because they dont want you. Now if some ACC school wants to go independent, well OK…Florida State and Miami were major independents for decades, so if they decide thats what they want to do, OK…Gonna be hard putting a good schedule together though.
“Being independent is hard cheese.” Coach Bill Yeoman
UH and Florida St. were both independents and played each other from 1960-1975. We started playing in the SWC in 1976. We’ve only played them twice since, 1978 and 2015 (Peach Bowl)
The only year we didn’t play them in that span was 1963.
Our record is 13-2-2 and a two game winning streak.
