Just so we’re not totally hijacking this thread. The most “maybe it wasn’t directly being a Nazi” I’m willing to give Musk is this: As an individual who needs to be both constantly given attention and praise (sound similar) he trolled to get the attention of everyone and to receive the praise of the online demographic who has been the most consistent in constantly praising him.
I think that’s very possible.

Elons been trolling since day 1
Just watch his interviews before he took over twitter, he was a completely different person and way more empathetic.
He became super far right under the disguise of “free speech”, and he just cares about dominating the EV market because Tesla essentially funds his entire life
It is really sad that he thinks this is a joke. “just trolling” doesn’t cut the mustard when you look at his history of statements and actions.
His trolling only continues to be seen as an endorsement by Neo Nazis and other anti-semites. Some will dismiss them as stupid but this type of acceptance can spur action.
For instance, the Antioch school shooter mentions influence of Candice Owens and Nick Fuentes. Dismissing them as idiots, stupid, or trolling (in Elon’s case) is apathetic acceptance.
