Ah- good point - it is not (had to look that up). Is in Indy, Indiana this year…
And it is kind of funny - one of the teams that ‘declined’ the NIT invitation was Indiana University … what a bunch of big headed egos…

NIT
No Interest Tourney
Yea, I think they stopped doing it at MSG every year a little while back. But traditionally thats where it was for the majority of the tournament life.
Im assuming it was an exciting game but the James Dickey years were atrocious…Goes to show how far this program has come. Beating Texas in a meaningless tournament was not on my list but remember seeing the game as one of UHs top 10 moments…I remember UH beating Arizona back in 2006 when they were ranked and everyone stormed the court. Penders at least brought excitement back for a little while. UH ended up getting a 25th ranking bc of the win and was then knocked off next week lol
CBI was based on a 16 team format and played on a schools home court. In 2020, they moved the entire tournament to Daytona Beach, FL. Schools had to pay $27,000 to play in it, then you add in travel cost plus room and board (not covered in the fee) and I can see why so many rejected it.
The last CBI could only get 11 schools to participate last year.
It was a bright spot in an otherwise dark time.
I don’t know about top-10 all-time, but it was definitely UH basketball’s single top moment during my time as a student. Only thing that comes close is beating UConn our first year in the AAC.
The only time I will watch the Nobody Important Tournament is if UH is playing and I hope that never happens again because we will be in the big dance.
I’m taking grad classes at Oklahoma State, so definitely pulling for the Cowboys
I want all B12 teams to win against non B12 teams. But I don’t necessarily want to watch their games.
Back when i was a student during the McCallum & Pender years, making the NIT was quite an achievement ![]()
I had successfully purged McCallum from my mind and you had to bring him up. Yeah, he took us to the NIT one year when he had an 18-15 record. Of course we lost to Vandy in that one. Penders brought us to 3 post season tourneys besides the NCAA. But he did take us to the big dance once. But Penders never had a losing season, whereas McCallum only had that one winning season, his other 3 had 9 or less wins in each.
Penders gave us hope which Dickey took away.
I hope OSU wins it all
If my memory is correct, the year the Coogs made the NIT with McCallum was when they had Kevin Gaines. He was expelled from the team because of some fight after the ECU game
For some reason, the thing i remember from McCallum was us playing a tournament or game in Hawaii I think and him being mic’d up during the game on tv for part of the game at least.
no.
Didn’t we lose to TSU in that tourney? I think we lost at home to Prairie View under McCallum…
Nope not paying any attention to the NIT(no one is interested tournament) lol
That was the Maui Invitational in November 2001. That was the year he took us to the NIT. We lost to UCLA and Kansas, but beat Chaminade 76-73.
