No. There is a pool of refs and they all call games for all conferences. And apparently there aren’t a ton of refs in that pool because these guys generally call 3-5 games a week.
Many of them officiated our games when we were in the AAC as well. So if they truly do have a different mind set when they ref Big 12 games, who is instructing them to do that?
There may technically be a pool, but we see the same refs over and over, so it isn’t like they are randomly assigned.
Yeah, I don’t know if it’s randomly assigned. I’m sure a brand new ref would not be assigned to the best games immediately. But I often see a ref that calls one of our games calling a game in a completely different conference later on. I know Ryan Monceaux puts out a tweet before most games talking about how many games our refs have called recently and the last time they called one of our games. I’m not sure where he gets that info, though. Here’s an example from the UCF game.

Where do you find this out? Is there a website that has the scheduled refs?
I have a work colleague that has been an NCAA ref for over 30 years. I’m going to miss a few conferences, but in essence his pool of conferences is the Pac 12, Big West, Mo Valley, Sun Belt and Mountain West. As his peak, he was doing 4-5 games per week.
Yes, there is a major referee shortage, mainly because they can’t build a pipeline (Like most other sports) because parents and coaches act like idiots at the younger levels so many referees quit before they have a chance to take the next step.
There should not be a way to find out who referees are until the day of. I know for the NCAA Tournament; referees often don’t know until a couple days before where they are going. They try to avoid potential pregame influence from fans and any gambling issues by people knowing who is doing what game.
