Because youth is wasted on the young.
Please do not compare the Iowa fan base with the Houston fan base. Different environments, different motivations.
Iowa St. has built a loyal fan base over decades and is 1 of 2 flagship universities of the state. UH is not a state flagship, competes with other universities in the city, and pro sports teams and other entertainment options. UH has to fight for every fan it can get.
lolâŠIowa State, for being a 1 or 2 flagship (which they are a distant 2nd to Iowa btw) has 20,000 LESS students than the University of Houston and sits in a state that has 4 million LESS people than the Houston metro.
Only differenceâŠthey accept Traditional StudentsâŠand we just started accepting them in sizable numbers here recently.
here we goâŠ*grabs popcorn
Students were great again. Our long play seems to be working on the students. Students living on campus makes for them being engaged with the university. If youâre not engaged as a freshman, chances are that you wonât be as an alum.
The number of alums, not so much.
BINGO!
Dr. Khator finally gets to implement her vision, for the type of students we accept!
Our students were ok at best. They showed up late and left early. Granted, a decent number of them at least walked into the stadium, which is more than I can say about much of the rest of our fanbase.
I saw you bust out multiple Whose House chants in 117 lol
You know how I roll mayne!
Getting there late is like a Houston tradition, but leaving right after halftime shows they donât get it - Houstonians leave early in the 4th quarter to beat traffic. ![]()
Seriously, it was weird how many dipped out with the game being so tight. I guess they couldnât take the lake of offense or something.
Boring, losing football will not attract the casual Houston fan and UH plays boring, losing football.
Fine, if you think the comparison to Iowa is objectionable, then letâs go with UCF or Cincinnati. Neither one of those has been very good the last few years. How do you think their crowds would have reacted to a defensive third down with two minutes left in a tied game on homecoming?
My wife and I have two tickets and we have two friends (a couple) who always go with us. Unless the game is really tight or a barn-burner, they leave early. Without fail. They left early in West Virgininia game last year. They left early this game. I donât get it.
Iâve noticed any time past mid 3rd quarter, if either team scores, a certain number of people head for the exits. If another score happens, same result. Until eventually my section, and those surrounding, are essentially empty. It is a strange phenomenon Iâve discussed with multiple people Iâve brought to games.
So weird.
There are some that will leave early no matter what is going on in the game so they can beat the traffic leaving. Me, Iâm a bitter end type of guy.
I think you have to compare us to Miami, UCLA, Ga Tech, etc. Teams in large metro areas who arenât the fabric of the community due to the population size and other factors. If you arenât winning or entertaining you are competing with a lot of other things. I have a some young alums at my gym and they really donât feel an attachment to the school. I bring up games and the program and they donât care or follow it. I always say Houston is a bad sports town in general. Its not a die hard city at all.
And this is why getting students to games should be prioritized above almost anything else.
It looked like they did a good job getting people into the 300s with the free tickets, but there was noticeable gaps in the season ticketholders, I sit in 131 which is visitors side, 30 yard line and before the kick off they had an usher checking tickets and the section was only Utah fans, but it filled in with upper deck ticket holders once the usher left. Definitely a late arriving crowd.
Students at 6:30
Had the Trill burger and tenders and they were as good as the hype for stadium food.
