IMHO, you missed seafood (not Creole) and good ol’ American (hot dogs, burgers and CFS)
Man, good point, especially on the Chicken Fried Steak.
I sincerely apologize. I will now turn in my official Texan card
LOL . . . . . Mods, we need a ha ha button on this site . . . . .
Not really we are talking 2004-05 when they were crushing the Astros in rating Texans were bad then and Astros were pretty good. I think fans were still excited the NFL was back and now there is serious apathy towards the Texans.
OH YEAH MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD MY SPECIALTY TOPIC
Okay okay, so. Caspian is great, family ordered from there all the time. Kasra was a close second as it was close to the house. Garson sucks.
Aga’s is indo-pak but has similar food.
Fadi’s will take the cake for arab food.
We need to have the most outstanding fan experience around. We need to provide an experience that is even better than an NFL game.
I think that can be done with facilities. I have posted in the past about adding permanent structures which enhance the pregame experience. If you look at the some of the best facilities around the NFL (thinking mostly Cowboys and LV Raiders) they are ALL adding outdoor facilities which make it easy to watch other football games that are on during the time of a tailgate. They also have multiple food and beverage options outside of the stadium for the walk-up fans.
I have very much enjoyed the UHAA Life Member tailgate at home and away games. I highly recommend becoming a Life Member in order to get into the party. There is always a great meal and beverage options free for members.
Some college campuses are hosting their own College Gameday type experience. BYU comes to mind. Other campuses have outdoor concerts prior to game time and Tech comes to mind there.
If you sync up the facilities outside the stadium, a pregame show with a concert (need acts people want to pay to see), then I think you have a whole new experience. Make it an event that you cannot find anywhere else. Make it easy to participate.
(I LOVE that you can have a Tailgate company setup and break down your space and provide TV and shade options.)
Of course we still have our Gameday traditions such as Cougar Walk. I enjoyed attending the one this past weekend. However the experience was quick. What about enhancing it with more entertainment? As an alum, I had trouble finding a cool place to sit down and drink beer with my friends. My wife got too hot and we headed for the UC which led us to The Den, but it was a long walk! Another lady in our party felt the heat too and she and her husband stayed at The Den for most of the first quarter before hoping in an Uber to make it back to the stadium. We went back after the game. It was a good time. We could have stayed at the tailgate with better options.
I’m always hoping that somebody will build some bars/restaurants/coffee shops along Scott St. I think with the 45K of UH students and the (I’m guessing) 10K or so TSU students, you’d do pretty good business.
And those would be places people not interested in actual tailgating could come early for the game and hang out.
If I had a few million dollars laying around, I’d do it, but that’s not going to happen unless I won the Powerball tonight.
What’s the best way to have a million dollars in the bank? Start with three million and build something for which there is no demand.
If sheila and co will let the area gentrify, this will happen. But they won’t so there are not enough people with disposable income that can support these types of business in third ward. Students alone won’t do it.
Next year for the start of B12, we should see the train on north side coming from Galveston, the light rail coming in, and the paddle boat coming from downtown bayou. All could be fun ways to come to the games and avoid traffic. In door tailgating at the practice facility, permanent pavilions and new turf with end zone facility will all be fun. I would like to see a large covered walk way from garage so people can get from car to stadium out of heat and rain with a party deck on top overlooking new end zone turf. Need to think outside the box and increase fan experience.
Lol.
The only way you don’t think the Third Ward is gentrifying is if you are under the age of 3 or legally blind.
There are now $4m houses in Riverside Terrace. There are new middle class houses going up between TSU and 288. The townhome farms are moving SE from Midtown. There are currently 4 private student living complexes under construction including a 16 story tower across the street from the softball stadium.
But the pesky SJL is in the way…
It needs to improve its any eye sore an embarrassment to the University, unfortunately people unknowingly perceive the school in a bad light due to the surrounding areas
Riverside Terrace is NOT the Third Ward. That doesn’t count.
If you look right across Scott, it doesn’t exactly look gentrified yet.
We do not have a lot of authentic Mexican food in Houston. We have “Tex-mex”. Tex-Mex uses mostly flour tortillas, lots of yellow cheeses, tortilla chips, and beef. And cumin. Lol
Can we just make it our own. Authentic Texan!
The historic Third Ward included Riverside Terrace and extended west to Hermann Park. But Houston doesn’t care about history.
But if you want to get into semantics and say the neighborhood directly across the bayou from our campus and includes private student apartments isn’t a part of it, have at it.
We should call it “Texican”, which, ironically, is what the Mexicans used to call the White settlers during the colonial period.
Whatever we call it I will eat it
Give me some Mi Tierra and Los Jardines any day of the week! Original Ninfa’s was legit too.
Maybe if you go all the way back to the 1800s.
But you’re about the only person that I’ve heard during my lifetime that has equated Riverside Terrace with the Third Ward.
Most people clearly distinguish the two.
The area immediately adjacent to UH across Scott Street which EVERYBODY agrees is the Third Ward still looks VERY run down. It could use some gentrification.
I don’t even see how they allow people to live in some of those houses.
We drove thru Scott st for the last to games and I noticed it’s better. Plenty of empty lots that can be developed and a brand new Frenchys state of the art once opened. Outside dining facing Scott. The area looks better.
This is what we mean when we say “Riverside Terrace.” The name evokes images such as this 1930s Art Deco MANSION, with all the amenities…might as well be straight out of the Gilded Age:
Would fit in just fine in River Oaks…or any of the poshest suburbs!
That area has little need for “gentrification.” It’s definitely NOT what we mean when we say “Third Ward,” and I doubt that anyone uses “Third Ward” in common parlance to refer to Riverside Terrace.
OTOH, that area immediately across Scott Street from UH which EVERYONE agrees is the Third Ward…gosh…I realize that it may not be AS BAD now as it has been in the past, but it’s a LONG way from looking non-dilapidated.
It definitely needs gentrification!
