100% agree. If play has to be stopped because a player is cramping, at a minimum that player should have to sit out the remainder of the series. I still remember how furious I was at Todd Graham when Tulsa did this to us. It was literally every play as we were making that comeback. They had 2 LBs who just took turns faking cramps.
I didn’t think this was illegal. Dirty, yes, but not illegal as long as the player being cut is not already engaged up high. Is there a rule in college about coming in from the side?

It wasn’t illegal that game but this year it is illegal. People are confusing it with high-low rules. Targeting the MCL or LCL area is what Navy did as well. They didn’t dive at his knees head up(face-to-face). The CFB want’s players to be able to protect themselves from the side of the knee diving tackles. If it’s head up, then Ed or any other player would be able to get his hands ready to counter it.
So back to what I asked before. This player blocked with his shoulder. If a defensive player dives and shoulder tackles a player below the thighs, should this be a penalty as well? Every time I see one of our players tackle that way, i cringe but the crowd cheers.
You can look it up but it’s not illegal to block below the waist in certain situations. You can block within 5 yards of the line and from the front.
You can block below the waist with certain parameters. You cannot high low which is a chop block and is a penalty.
I get it. Everyone is mad Ed got hurt on an illegal play. However, there are rules in place on blocks below the waist.

Exactly. I cringe as well. Even for the other team. It just isn’t one of those things that ends well. Even from the player that’s making the tackle; he has to lower his helmet and is launching. It’s just asking for trouble either way. That’s why I say it should be an penalty/ejection.
Was this from the front or the side?
And we’re not just worried about Ed, this has future implications for other players as well. I don’t think anyone here is JUST concerned with Ed’s safety.
It’s the front and interior linemen can block from the side.

Clearly not head up.

Lol no it’s not. NO lineman can target the LCL and MCL area of a player’s knee. It’s illegal. And the player that made the illegal “tackle” (clearly not a block), was a FB.
Only interior linemen can block below the waist from the side. Everyone else’s blocks below the waist must come from the front. Previously, other offensive players were allowed to low-block from the side as long as they were inside the tackle box — the area about five yards in either direction from the snapper, and extending backward to the offense’s goal line.
And the FB’s shoulder hits him in front of his knee. If you look at the video in the link I provided there’s a block very similar where the back has a running start at a LB.

You just said linemen can’t block from the side, yet there it is in the rules they can. So you either don’t know the rules or you can’t read.
His shoulder hits the front of his knee and makes it legal. He is not interior lineman but he’s within 5 yards and it’s from the front. He comes at an angle but it’s not from the side.
It’s all right in the text.

The words initial position are key. You can’t come across the formation which in fact would result in targeting the MCL or LCL area! And if it was straight up, his shoulder wouldn’t hit, his helmet would… C’mon dude.

Right, If you’re inside the tackle box you can. So a guard could crash the nose tackle below the waist and that would be from the side. However you can’t come outside to in from a WR position and go low.

lol Are any of the players in this video making contact with the side of Ed’s knee, a G, or a WR? Are any of those players in their initial position at the snap of the ball or did they(he) come across the formation and make contact with their shoulder (something on the side of the body)?
I’m talking about the rule not that specific play. However, in that specific play it’s from the front inside of 5 yards so it’s legal.
Linemen can block low and even block to the side. It’s written that way. You keep making incorrect statements and then arguing different points. I’m not even sure what your point is.
