ACtually, this specific play is one of the reasons they updated the rule. It was legal then and now illegal.

There’s a huge difference. First, the player being tackled is usually not engaged with one or several players putting extra force on his extremities. Second, players expect tackles below the waist. When you’re running in the open field and you see somebody coming low, you can relax the plant leg.
Injuries happen with these kinds of tackles, but it’s pretty rare. OTOH, engage pushing against 550-600 pounds of offensive linemen, and then have someone dive into your knee from the side. Huge difference in the ability to prep for the hit, and the consequent strains and stresses to the body.

Pretty awful from this view. You can see the lineman engage Oliver, another lineman push that lineman into Oliver to make sure Oliver would be stood up and the chopping lineman diving straight at Oliver’s knees. Coach Ken should be suspended for allowing this.
