To be clear, when they say “in debt” I’m pretty sure they are talking about all the bills they have to pay over the next few years in coaching and renovation contracts. There was a big story about the increasing debt of major universities and it was related to future debt versus “guaranteed” revenue.
Its starting the feel like there is a reset coming. The situation reminds me of what the NHL went through a few years ago.
There is no way ESPN will be able to keep up the payments. On top of that you have schools who are more concerned with shiny things than budget strings.
Look at tu. Herms had barely hit the door before he was saying that this and that needed upgrades. Judas apologists will say that he’s a visionary, but he’s got no skin in the game. He will take credit for the new purchases, but would flee tomorrow if he thinks it would benefit HIM.
When revenue and spending meet, there will be a problem. In the meantime, some schools with lesser resources will “invest” themselves to death.
