I saw this on linkedin:
I can only imagine another round of lawsuits will follow.
My uncle told me he thought NIL and paying players was the best thing to happen to college sports. I told him it was going to make college sports a chaotic mess.
Not sure it will matter. The schools with money will just go back to cheating.
Yes, this is accurate by multiple reports. The B1G is following the recommendation by the Protect College Sports Act, before it is even passed.
To me, I will be watching how the SEC reacts to this. My guess is the SEC will object to placing an NIL cap on schools.
Since the B1G NIL limit is not collectively bargained, the student athletes have a court case waiting to be filed.
…and who is going to monitor it?
The ncaa?

I think they will surprise everyone by backing it. Not to level the playing field, though. Just to get their bag man $$ under the table advantage back.
You mean the SE-SLEAZE?
50mil? That’s unsustainable. Get ready for $20 beers and $30 nachos.
This is a man that understands “the vig.”
Can always eat and drink at the tailgate.
The IRS? ![]()
They should have just let college age kids play professionally in the USFL or whatever minor league exists now and left college alone.
Since that is being self imposed by one conference, I would assume the conference would be monitoring it.
This came up before, this is not what you want the IRS regulating. Besides, they don’t have the resources to answer the phones much of the time so giving them more stuff to do isn’t going to be helpful.
“The conference would be monitoring it”
Monitoring it at the detriment of some of their members?
This is the same conference that hid the most horrific sexual crimes for decades and you expect them to monitor it? This is like writing that the pedophile penitentiary u police was monitoring the piece of excrement that sandusky is.
I wasn’t suggesting it would be above board. I was stating a fact, if it is a rule imposed by the conference and only by the conference, it would be up to the conference to monitor and enforce it.
Could they be trusted to enforce it fairly? Don’t know, don’t really care. As far as the rest of your post, that’s way off topic. Now, they could hire someone to do so as an “impartial” enforcement mechanism like some sort of law or accounting firm. That might help take some of the personal interest of each schools out of it. But other than that, I don’t know who else would be appropriate to monitor or enforce the rule.
The College Sports Commission (CSC) was tasked by the House Settlement Agreement for monitoring NIL Agreements, but only as they relate to NCAA rules. The B1G’s new NIL proposal would be subject to B1G’s rules and B1G would need to expand its compliance enforcement staff, or farm out review to a third party, which would cost the conference money.
I can’t see the CSC reviewing for B1G’s rules, particularly if other conferences adopt different rules. Each conference must monitor its own rules. A key provision in any type of monitoring is public transparency. That can be an effective deterrent if administrated properly. Also having stiff penalties for the athlete and school.
Also would be a question on if they have the authority to do so.
The big10 commissioner serves the big10 schools. Within the big10 schools less than a handful control the big10. The big10 commissioner is a lackey to them. Don’t ever think for a second that he is independent. The big10 schools don’t like him? He will be canned before the door shuts. You might think this is off topic but let me remind you that the big10 conference is the same conference that produces the worst possible crimes known to mankind and nothing was done to these big10 blue bloods.
The commissioner has no authority whatsoever. What he is paid to do is say “Thank you sir. Do you need anything else and may I clean your shoes?”
