Obviously, there is room for debate on what was the greatest university of Houston football team! The 1973 arguably the best Houston cougar team of all times. They beat a (9-2) Tulane who had just beaten LSU! Cougar defeated Tulane 47 to 7! The cougars compose 656 total yards,402 rushing! A friend of mine played defensive back for the Green Wave and said that was the greatest team he had ever played!
I have been a fan and supporter since 1957. Got my B.S. degree in '61, J.D.in '63. Never attended a game while in college (poor and working my way through. But when I returned from active duty the first thing I did was get season tickets. Before I retired I contributednand funded a football scholarship. Knew all the coaches and traveled with the team to away games. For some years now medical conditions have limited my mobility. I appreciate all your comments and reminiscences. They have brought back many great Cougar memories.
Texas Bowl 2025 vs LSU!
When I went to UH as a student I was in hotel/restaurant/bar business. I was always encountering people who were from out of town who would buy tickets to games just to see the inside of the Astrodome.
Due to its historical importance I have decided that 01/01/1977 was our greatest Bowl win.
First year in SWC. Beat an undefeated team.
Finished with a #4 National Ranking, which is the highest final ranking UH ever has achieved.
The 1977 Cotton Bowl victory over Maryland on a really cold January 1st. Coogs had shocked the world winning the 1976 SWC Football Championship. Beating MD. was the cherry on that sundae.
Of course they would have. Archie Manning once said that UH was the hardest team he ever played against. UH in the sec would have been a win win for both U of H and the sec. For LSU this would have been a perfect regional rivalry.
Ryan Monceaux has it in the UH history section.

Everyone interested in our history please visit the history thread. Ryan Monceaux is doing an amazing job with it.
What got us in “no man’s land” with our attendance is the impact of the probations on our entire program. I wrote about it a few months ago. These probations created seven seismic side shift in our history. After every one of these historical events we had to start over from scratch again. We barely survived the SWC implosion. Where we are today speaks loudly about our will to survive against all odds.
Spot on Chris. Probations, Cedric Dempsey PSL ($100 per seat) in 1980, kicked to CUSA in 1996, bad hires….great for the program to be moving forward!
I agree that 1977 Cotton Bowl was our greatest bowl win! I think the 1973 team was our BEST in our history!
Absolutely, Chris…our will to survive is a big part of who we are. A lot of schools could never have survived what we went through…
Hard to beat the magic of the Armed Forces Bowl but given that we were playing in front of 63k last night I’d probably have to put this Texas Bowl win at #2 of the bowl wins I’ve seen. Peach Bowl is still #1 obviously and that’s not changing until Fritz leads us to a playoff victory!
I agree with you. Peach Bowl was #1 for me. Last nights game was electric.
The Peach Bowl was a great victory for UH, but to be the best bowl victory, at least in my mind, it needs to be a come-from-behind, last minute, or last second, heart-stopping play. QBs Terry Elston and Greg Ward Jr. led those heart-stopping drives. I attended all three bowl victories, and the Peach Bowl is definitely top 5, but not 1 or 2.
What were your bowl’s greatest list in order?
Nebraska Cotton Bowl
Peach Bowl
Maryland Cotton Bowl
Pittsburgh AF Bowl
LSU Texas Bowl
Auburn Bluebonnet Bowl
Penn State Ticket City Bowl
Air Force AF Bowl
Tangerine Bowl
Tulane Bluebonnet Bowl
Navy Garden State Bowl
Always disliked the ego’s from Austin. The aggies, well, I liked them when we beat them. My only exposure to them was band day in Austin and the radio game of the week, but I cannot recall who the major sponsor of that network was. Exxon comes to mind, but I belive they were still Esso at that time.
Sure there is recency bias but this bowl win is top 3 now for me
Best of all the games. Last minute, come from behind, tipped pass, caught anyway for go ahead TD.
Entire experience including the weather was a completely 180 from the previous year at that location.
