Ball movement and actions on offense were a huge departure of Wes Miller and even Mick Cronin stagnant offenses.
In my opinion this is a UC team that can survive a few players having off days and still being super productive. Allenspach likely gets eaten on defense but when we’re on offense, your big will have to stretch to the 3 point line to guard him. Same for Elamin at the 4 but he can also play a lot of 3 and then Tejada can also play the 4 and stretch the defense.
If UC can stretch out out the defense from the 4 & 5 spot, it’s gonna mean a lot of layups and free throws for Riley.
Just keep in mind, they just need to get really good at short rolls and gets. Because they need to be fully prepped for teams that bring 2 to the ball every time 2 players come together or they get close to the boundary lines.
Very different coaching for Big 12 defenses vs the MWC. The days of being able to set a high ballscreen and or play 5 out are over. And don’t even think about driving baseline in this league. Right, @IowaCoog ?
Calhoun had an Utah state team built with under 2 million (some say 800k) score over a point per possession against the best defense in the big 12 and the 2nd best in the nation. They did the same in the mwc tourney against 16th rated defense too.
Calhoun can coach offense. I’m certain of that.
I think he will quickly pick up on that Houston & Iowa state traps every post touch & scheme around it. My guess is he tries to use Houston’s foul prone defense against them send guys to the line since Sampson is elite in not letting you run your stuff.
That said. It is year 1. But I’m just excited in the way Calhoun built this roster
