I remember those Athlon and Lindy Big 12 mags …What a tragedy they are not around any more!
On a related note, the prices for these preseason magazines is ridiculous. I stopped buying Dave Campbell’s Texas Football when it required me to take out a loan.
So basically, because they were to spokesperson for the conference, they are the leader? Will have to disagree as I do not see one leader in the conference and that would be a good thing. Just a spokesperson.
What did Tilman do with K State? I thought it was more statewide pressure in Texas.
“Baylor and Tech were indifferent, but TCU was determined to keep us out. And NO member was, and is, more anti Houston than the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas would have worked unceasingly to keep us out, because they feared our BB program.”
Please provide proof of this statement. I don’t have problems as to which teams wanted or did not want UH, but I have seen completely conflicting stories. Some say TCU and BU were for, some against. Same with Tech. Also earlier, it was a problem having too many schools in Texas. All hearsay unless someone has direct info on votes or quotes from presidents and ADs. Internet fan forums do not count as proof.
The instant microwave society has devalued magazines
Kids see their faces all over 24/7 it’s not a big deal to wait for a magazine now like it was years ago - plus the magazine is an extension of a newspaper and you see how that industry has died
Sadly though teams in places like HISD are covered less despite more reporting outlets cause the product is so bad and traditional outlets have moved away from sports
Well, call me old fashioned, but I still highly anticipate and buy Dave Campbell’s rag every year. I also buy one other national annual.
I usually check Athlon’s, Phil Steele, and Lindy’s and buy whichever one has UH picked the highest.
Not entirely true.
There were some 5300+ print magazines in 2002, now in 2020 that number was over 7400. The market is changing, yes, but not disappearing. It is being handled much better than newspapers. Also print production technology has made it easier to create a magazine and not need as high a volume to stay afloat.
That said, it does not address local coverage unless someone gets the desire to create a magazine for the coverage.
But why the cost keeps going up for Dave Campbell as printing technology is better by far - the font gets smaller also
But the Excitement of picking that magazine up is long gone like it was in the early 00s
Even Campbell had to shift to a more online medium to stay relevant
Technology better does not mean cheaper. Cost for things like paper still go up, esp compared to before covid and after. I think most businesses also see no reason to lower rates if people keep paying, keep the better margins if cost go down.
Technology may allow for shorter runs thus more niche magazines can be made easier if I am remembering correctly from last I explored it.
Apparently the excitement being long gone is opinion for some, not fact for all.
The old days you brought in a crew to print and bind a magazine and it took hours - now a machine can do it all instantly - all digital - you used to have to burn a plate and send a file manually but it’s straight ftp now
I agree paper is the issue in terms of cost
All this speculation about how we got strong armed into the Big XII since the original plan was to stay at 11 (or invite Memphis or SMU instead
) is the craziest thing I’ve ever read.
Somebody’s trippin. Good drama though and we can’t get enough of that.
Dan Patrick:
Invite Houston or else!
Bob Bowlsby:
Oh! Well that changes things.
Draw your own conclusions.
According to the Chronicle, that’s more or less what happened. Tilman Fertitta intervened, as did two high level politicians (use your imagination as to who those might have been).
Then the Big 12 changed its mind.
Quote: From the article:
Is UH in the Big 12 without Fertitta?
“The short answer is no. No,” said [Houston AD] Pezman, dragging out the last word for emphasis.
“Toward the end, when it felt like we needed to fire bullets politically, that’s the guy (Fertitta) that’s got — he had our back,” Pezman said. “A couple weeks ago, I wasn’t sure it was going our way. I called (Fertitta) at like 9 o’clock on a Sunday night and it was a moment of abject terror because I’m like, ‘We’ve fired a lot of bullets.’ The next morning, he was grinding through it.
There was a couple really high political people in the state, that you can imagine, and he just made it happen. He was very clear about how it would affect him and his perceived leadership of the university. … It certainly didn’t hurt having a guy like him that can make those phone calls and be able to get those calls answered. I can’t.”
For those of you that are really old like me, do you remember ‘Street & Smith’s’?
Sure I do.
I also remember Don Heinrich’s college football annual. Not sure when that one ceased publication.
I know he was a pro football writer…but…
Joel Buchsbaum FTW!
Back in the 50’s and 60’s Street and Smith was the gold standard for football magazines followed closely by Sporting News. I looked forward to it every year. Of course that was before I went to UH and was still an LSU fan and/or student.
I can’t remember when it happened but S&S eventually was pushed to the side by Athlon. Since I was from Louisiana, I had no clue about DC’s Texas Football magazine.
LABOR DAY! Kicking the can down the road. smh

Good God.
How are ANY of the PAC Presidents OK with this?
Why aren’t they bolting?
I don’t think any of them actually want to be in the XII. Sure if there is a major discrepancy, there might be some reluctant defectors. But I truly believe that none of the current PAC 10 schools actually have any desire to be in the Big XII.
Is the PAC toast?
Why have they not been able to strike a media deal?
Is losing LA teams making them undesirable?
Would B12 adding AU and CU finish the deal?
On this date, A YEAR AGO, the PAC issued a statement that they are to begin media rights negotiations immediately!
A year later…crickets.
