One thing UH did that SDSU would not is keep Houston as part of the Big 12. That is important for recruiting.
If UH was not included, Houston would have been purely SEC in all public appearance: only SEC on the sports news, only SEC in media references, sports bars, etc… This city is more important recruiting than southern cal for most all Big 12 schools. It is already bad enough that when I walk into a bookstore they only carry the SEC special editions for football and not Big 12 editions.
You’re absolutely spot on about UH not making it to Big12. Literally the day before the Big12 was going to announce or vote who the new members of the Big12 would be, UH was not one of the schools approved. BYU, UCF, and Cincy already had been told.
Big12 wouldn’t return Pezman’s calls. Fortunately Pezman asked Tilman to call the Big12. Tilman made the call that day and personally got UH into Big12 at the 11th hour.
I don’t know if UH hadn’t been accepted what other college (if any) would have been selected.
MWC TV deal expires 25-26.
SDSU seem stuck until then barring a PAC surprise.
Let SDSU play a MWC schedule but try 2 withhold TV $ / NCAA Tourney credits ?
That would be interesting.
Tough, tough spot for SDSU if the $17 million bill holds in court.
SDSU hoop run a huge reload of MWC NCAA Tourney credits.
That post wasn’t intended to provoke. I intended to encapsulate the true posture of the B12 at that time. They were in a state of panic. But even in that position of weakness there were plenty players that wanted to keep us out.
Go back and look at the sports apparatus for each b12 school (bloggers et.al.). When they were speculating they made a conspicuous effort to leave us out of the possibilities. And their fans?? OMG! I don’t remember a b12 fan base actively supporting UH.
Make no mistake. I’m glad we made it in. But mostly for self-preservation. I would have been happy with the ACC or PAC back then, too. Thank God for Tilman.
We got in because de facto Big 12 leader Kansas State told Baylor, TCU , Tech and Kansas they better vote YES, or else. Story was in one of the newspapers in Kansas, talking about how K State’s leadership saved us getting in the Big 12. This occured only weeks after the trip to Cali PAC 12 fiasco where PAC…big surprise…did nothing … Tillman helped get Texas politicos on board…Put the 2 together, we are IN…and so it happened…
You’re absolutely right. It was BYU, Cincy and UCF who got the call and they would have stuck with 3 if they had to. Although Tillman pulled the strings in getting us in, I have also heard that the TV networks were mentioning to the Big 12 that UH & BYU should be in…
Watching us recruit, and imagining Barry Switzer laughing at Baylor and TCU and Tech, and saying…"See? Told ya!! "
They already regret voting Yes…but the great rivalries being back will make all that go away once we start playing…
I believe K State was pulling for UH to get in because of what the TV networks had stated to the Big 12. Those are my assumptions though…In 2016 UH & BYU were the top candidates until BYU had issues with the LGBT community and so they were going with Cincinnati until they decided to do nothing…
If my memory is correct for 2016, there was some clause in the TV contract that stated if the Big 12 expands the members would get more revenue and BYU and UH were the suggested schools but none of the ADs were for it. Abbott & Dan Patrick was pulling for UH to get in but wasn’t even enough after they decided to just stay at 10, then OUT pulls a 360 on them 5 years later…
Someday, there will be definitive background story of how UH was invited to the B12 and the conversations between the UH powerbrokers, e.g., Fertitta and Khator, and state leaders and B12 members.
It amazes me to this day, that there is still disagreement of how UH was left out of the B12 after the breakup of the SWC. I tend to believe there were a lot of politics behind the scenes jockeying for position. All I know is Gov. Richards and Lt. Governor Bullock are sure mentioned a lot.
Tillman using his clout and Kansas State de facto now leader of the B12 were highly influential in UH getting in period. BU, TT, were against us. TCU not so much I think.
Yeah don’t you remember?? That’s the only reason we got in over Memphis! Oh and that the Big 12 tried to get too much more money from FedEx at the last moment……
Sadly, neither Athlon or Lindy’s publish Big 12 magazines anymore. Athlon only does the national edition, and Lindy’s has national, SEC, and Big 10 editions. Casualties of the times, I wonder how much longer Dave Campbell’s Texas Football will last.
Purple, it is a little easier for us older retired guys to keep up with things. If you read national sports and newspaper coverage of college FB, you would know that after Texas and OU bolted, Kansas State became the defacto leader of the Big 12. The league HAD to be held together for that first month or 2…They were willing to do it, and they DID IT… With no PAC expansion the next month at the PACs big “announcement” , the Big 12 became secure again. …K State president and AD were absolutely committed to holding the league together and adding viable members that would add strength and stability to the league for the future. They did, and look at us now…WHY are they still the leader? They saved the league, that’s why…Why did we get in? Because K State and Tilman worked together to get us in…Baylor and Tech were indifferent, but TCU was determined to keep us out. And NO member was, and is, more anti Houston than the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas would have worked unceasingly to keep us out, because they feared our BB program.
