Oregon and Washington used the Friday meeting to drum up intrigue from BIG, used The Athletic with the “Pac9 alive” story, then didn’t even show up to the meeting because they were on the phone with the BIG.
The media deal had 2 Presidents willing to sign it. This is a direct quote from Michael Crow. There was no support.
Right now there’s blame dispersal and posturing. Nobody wants to be seen as the bad guy, the one who killed the league.
But Arizona to Big12 was finalized and announced internally Thursday night. Coaches, Alums, Boosters were all told Thursday. You don’t walk that back to be stuck in a dying conference with an awful media deal with multiple members angling to get out.
Even with the debt, I think Cal and Stanford would still be worthwhile adds for the Big 12.
SDSU: That 30 mill exit fee is a problem, and sure… maybe they can negotiate it, but as i’ve said before - any negotiation will have to greatly favor the conference. It won’t be an equal compromise.
Also - what SDSU has to think about if they do take a portion of the revenue share (i doubt they would even get half a share), they would have to factor in travel expenses which is going to cost a ton by not being in a regional conference. People seem to forget about that.
Despite San Diego State and Oregon State being linked to the Big 12 recently, it sounds like it is just smoke without a fire as of right now. With that being said, it will be interesting to see where these two schools end up.
Any team we add at this point will uniquely have their own justification.
We aren’t adding Stanford for the same reasons as UConn. We aren’t adding UConn for the same reasons we would add an SDSU. We aren’t adding SDSU for the same reasons we would add an ACC team.
Any decision will have to be strategically aligned with what happens with the ACC as well as the overall goal / growth of the Big 12 conference
I’ll stick with Scheer he’s said there talking there doing exactly that talking. What any good Commish would do. Vetting them. Don’t me they’ll ever be in this conference
The rumors on twitter (inc. Scheer) about XII having early talks with Oregon St. and SDSU I think are based on ESPNs desire to have that late content. As of now, they are locked out of the PT.
Big 12 needs to cool off on the expansion. All teams mentioned are not going anywhere and there is no need to expand just for the sake of expanding.
They got the best available PAC12 teams, now just stand pat and wait to see what happens with the ACC…
You’re locking Stanford and Cal into what is an already terrible deal, and you’re making your non-revenue athletes travel across the entire country as well as manage their own schoolwork.
This is a stupid idea, and it would in my opinion poorly reflect on Stanford considering they don’t theoretically need a football team all things considered. Or any sports really.
There’s no way there is actual smoke to all of this. I refuse to believe it. I think they’re trying to get the B1G to sweat for them.
Why would the ACC offer Stanford and Cal anywhere near 30 million? They aren’t worth any of that or worth the travel expenses even for the east coast teams.
The only reason any ACC team would agree to this would be to try and renegotiate their media deal only to get out of it sooner. The top half of the ACC clearly wants to join the Big 10 or the SEC. They want the ACC to die, but at this time FSU is the only being vocal about it.
