Seems to me that adding more teams might create some loopholes for FSU and their war on the GOR.

Just wondering. If Cal and Stanford were accepted, instead of the magnificent 8 it would take to disband the conference, would it take the magnificent 9?
I wasn’t a math major, but I believe 50% of 17 or 18 is nine with rounding. You would have to figure that Cal and Stanford are sold no’s on conference dissolution to break the GOR.
Now, does that open up the conference to renegotiate the current media contract? More importantly, does ESPN have to renegotiate?

don’t know but even a half share of ACC is more than a full share of MWC
Stanford isn’t joining the MWC.
I think it might’ve been a different thread, but I suggested that Stanford has essentially 3 choices
- Drop football
- Pray for an unlikely B1G Invite
- Join the Big 12
The Big 12 offers the best travel options for all sports, not just football. It also allows them to continue playing some of the former PAC teams and other teams that are geographically logical such as BYU, in a Big 12 West type of division. Having Stanford in the conference would also give a boost to the overall academic reputation which will help us snag top tier teams once the ACC implodes.

So…this will delude what FSU is making by even more to carry Stanford/CAL.

Only way is if this triggers some sort of renegotiation where select ACC schools can find a way out.
These things are leaked to the media for a reason.

ACC is starting to see the writing on the wall and has started coming around to fighting for survival. They were almost ready to pick up scraps from PAC 12, but Yormark was way ahead and got the corners.
BY talking with the Pac 4 is a defensive move and would lock the ACC in place. They already have their premier teams (FSU, Clemson) making noise about being stuck in a bad deal.
They know that their existence is on the line, but will/can they be nimble, aggressive and pounce? Their media deal isn’t enticing to anyone outside of 2nd tier G5 programs. And even if they do this, they open themselves up to changes to their current GOR and destabilization.
They’re not poaching any power conference.
Stanford has $36 billion. They can easily afford independence or even Football Only in the ACC.
I’m not saying Stanford can’t afford. Stanford can afford anything they want.
The problem is that if Stanford goes independent, then they’re going to severely struggle putting a schedule together year in and year out because the remaining power conferences are already loaded, in-conference. Therefore, Stanford would likely be stuck with scheduling terrible matchups which would greatly affect recruiting. Any worthwhile matchups for Stanford would all have to be away games. Sure, Stanford Athletics can afford it, but the mental toll it will take on their athletes is an entirely separate discussion.
It’s just about the same predicament as joining the ACC, except that Stanford brings no value to the ACC. All they would do is dilute the shares even more and require even more expenses for the teams to travel all the way to Palo Alto.
It’s just not worth it. The only reason ACC teams would agree to this would be to renegotiate their TV deal, only to get out of it faster.

That’s right, even might ND had to “join” the ACC to get football games scheduled.
BY talking to SDST to get Stanford to move quicker. I think it will be Stanford and Oregon St or stay at 16.

Honestly, the fate of Oregon State and Washington State is already written on the wall. They’re never going to compete in a Power conference ever again. The only way they are Power teams is if conferences remain regional which is not the direction CFB is heading towards. The B1G wants to expand west and east, and the SEC wants to expand east as well. The Big 12 will have a similar geographical footprint as the B1G except that the Big 12 has the Southwest region, and the B1G has the north-central region.
The only remaining teams in the west that have any real value is Stanford and Cal, and that’s mainly because of their academic prestige. Washington State and Oregon State aren’t valuable to any Power conference at this point. They fit best with the MWC.

So, are ASU and Utah getting full shares in ‘24? If so, how? I thought the Big 12 negotiated for 14 teams for this media rights deal?
ESPN are contractually required to give full pro rata shares to any P5 team that joins the Big 12, but they are capped at 16.
FOX are contractually required to give full pro rata shares to up to 14 teams, but they gave the Big 12 sort of an unwritten agreement that they’ll give full shares to 16 if they deem those teams valuable. It’s my understanding that FOX agreed to give Utah and ASU full shares.
Yeah, that will not be a fun flight back to Phoenix.
