nobody is saying they won’t leave (which they haven’t BTW) but the ACC will not break up, before 2036.
The leftover ACC schools will make way more money remaining in the conference.
Adding 3 new members ensured they will have the numbers to continue as conference and PROFIT from the departed.
Only chance the conference breaks up is if certain schools start securing life boats early but they can always do that to align with 2036 anyway so unlikely.
The ACC definitely can survive and be equal to the Big 12.
Blue bloods are leaving, and mud bloods won’t want to stay in a devalued conference.
The ACC will still exist at that point, but with more than five teams gone, including all of its high value brands, its TV contract will be renegotiated way down, and will be worth nowhere close to that of any power conference.
SMU will be left behind with those dwarves. HARDLY a brilliant outcome.
Why do YOU keep arguing against that?
Do you know more than all the experts?
Remember, the Big 12 charter was supposedly a perpetual contract.
Guess what?
Didn’t stop anyone from leaving.
Don’t expect this one to do so.
As we saw with UT’s exit fees……EVERYTHING is negotiable.
I’ve gotta jump in here and argue your first line there.
when realignment was hot and heavy (when the PAC finally dissolved) the overwhelming majority of the talking heads were talking and acting as if the ACC breakup was a foregone conclusion.
it was and still is being talked about as if its going to happen.
edit - and schools leaving the ACC is literally a breakup…
I think they will leave around the time that B1G and SEC contract negotiations come up in 5-6 year. Don’t expect it before then. But also do not see it holding all the way to 36.
Schools leaving the ACC is no longer a break up because they added 3 new members to ensure the number of schools remaining constitutes a conference, per their contract. .
That’s why that was such a huge Power Play by the ACC. It essentially locked ESPN into that contract through 2036 PLUS it made ESPN pay for 3 new members PLUS it handcuffed the dissenters (FSU + UNC + Clemson) in their ability to blow up the conference with NO penalty.
very good points 1927…expansion to 17 cripples FSU, NC and Clemmie from damaging the ACC or its contract by leaving…SEC doesnt want them anyway…mere moneygrubber schools whining about their payday…other ACC schools seem solidly opposed to the unholy 3 in every way…
