Big Ooops?

This is a WILD story.

It appears someone at Amazon inadvertently sent a layoff email on Tuesday, at a time when mass job cuts are expected at the e-commerce giant this week.

My colleagues Eugene Kim and Ashley Stewart report that some employees got a worrying calendar invitation that addressed impending job cuts and mentioned “Project Dawn,” an initiative to improve efficiency at Amazon, according to a copy obtained by Business Insider.

The invitation had the subject line “Send Project Dawn email” and was written by Colleen Aubrey, senior vice president of AWS Solutions, although it appears to have been sent by an assistant.

After the calendar invitation landed, confusion spread across an internal Slack channel with more than 36,000 Amazon employees, according to messages viewed by Business Insider. Staff questioned whether the message had been intended for Aubrey’s entire organization or only for those whose roles were being eliminated.

Read the rest of Eugene and Ashley’s scoop here.

They are laying off like 16,000 employees…

How close are we to Universal basic income?
I don’t think corporations will survive if regular foks don’t have money

A couple of years ago, my company had a massive layoff. Before people were notified that they were being let go, they got an email with a Fed Ex label to return their laptops. That’s how they found out before they found out. Our CEO was terminated soon after.

and who builds all those wonderful AI data centers popping up in everyones back yard?

welders.

the company I work for is a large scale fabrication company and our entire years backlog is filled with the structures for AI data centers.

A lot more than welders… but yeah, welding is a good skill to learn.

I’d be worried if I did something in supply chain, procurement, record keeping, HR, some IT admin roles, etc. at big companies because those lower level roles are going to be automated soon…

100% agree there. I actually run the procurement department for our shop(s) but AI isnt really going to creep into our industry anytime soon other than helping summarize emails and code excel spreadsheets (haha…)

but positions at companies that do the same stuff buy the same stuff schedule the same stuff over and over will absolutely be replaced sooner rather than later. or I guess already are
