Big ten proposes 24 to 28 team playoff field

All this really means is that P4 teams are going to play their backups by the tail end of the season

I mean why risk injuries if 8-5 Alabama gets an automatic bid

It literally serves no purpose to put G6 schools in a 28 team CFP when half their roster is hurt or fatigued just to fight 60 other teams/6 conferences for merely 2 spots

Am I wrong here? Someone explain

I think you are underestimating the excitement created when a low ranked team upsets a high ranked team in the playoffs. It happens in the NCAA Basketball Tournament and there is no reason it can’t happen in the College Football Playoffs. In fact, prior to the NCAA Basketball Tournament, once the brackets are announced, what is one topic of conversation? Which Cinderella team will emerge? The dream of a low ranked team beating a high ranked team fuels the excitement of fans. Granted, it did not happen in this year’s playoffs, but Arizona St. came very close to beating Texas.

The one really good thing about this proposal is that it eliminates the conference championship games. But then how do we determine who the conference champion is in a conference with divisions? Other than that, not sure there’s much good. How meaningless do we want the regular season to be? And somehow the Big 10 and SEC will still get an outsized number of bids, but I guess that’s not really a change. Would a 24-team playoff see the top eight teams get 1st round byes?

This is all about the $$$…and it more closely mirrors the playoffs in virtually every other level of FB from High School, to Jucos, to Div III, to Div II, to FCS and then even above us in the NFL. So due to the bowl system, only FBS college FB hasn’t had a true playoff.

Does anyone remember former Texas Tech FB Coach Mike Leach’s take on the college FB playoffs? He was pretty funny…and I’m sure it’s on YouTube.

Another scam to provide more playoff money for Big Ten and SEC teams and league.

I don’t think I’m underestimating it. Upsets happen. But a 24-team playoff absolutely nukes the importance of the regular season. Do we care about Vandy beating Bama when Bama’s in the playoff anyway? With a 12-team playoff we already had ND getting in despite a loss to Northern Illinois. How long is it before starters aren’t even playing in games like the Iron Bowl and The Game and Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate?

Remember, nobody watches regular-season College Basketball.

The gaming industry supports an expansion of the College Football Playoffs. It is good for business.

Money money money makes the earth go round.

I have been saying this for a while, it should be a 32 team playoff. Get rid of the traditional bowl system and make every game mean something so players will stay.

I would be interested to know what the other P4s think of the BIGs playoff proposal. My guess is, they eventually decide to go with a 16 team playoff. We’ll know by DEC 10.

The trend here is it seems the Big isn’t backing down and the latest proposal is simply another attempt to feed enough big members to keep them happy since they added more big dogs under a 4422 or the 7755 split under the new plan.

I like the new plan bc 5 spots keeps all worthy big12 members happy and gives us a shot each yr. It replaces the bowl game slots in a way that we’d get but way better.

Also the new plan does move us closer to parity with the sec and big10 bc percent wise the 4422 is 50% for us and 7755 is 71% of it so we moved up some. Plus the new format will be more inclusive even for g5 at 2 spots.

If we refuse it then it prob crashes the attempt and we stay at 12 teams fighting to get 2 spots.

The nation knows that the sec and big have more top dogs than us and if we kept UT , OU and added clemson and Fla st , we’d feel the same as them.

BY could simply put a look in clause that if the Acc blows up and we get Fla st , clemson, Miami etc, we simply give the big 12 another spot at 6 or something to make up for the added big dogs.

You really have to think of what your passing up which is UH having a way better shot at playoffs each yr.

I hate double standards more than I hate the offseason. Awarding one team over another (think :moneybag: :moneybag: :moneybag:) just because of conference affiliation really really really chaps my hide.

Team A could beat Team B in the regular season only to watch Team B on the field during the CFP from the couch? F that!!!

We’re losing our minds along with any semblance of sportsmanship. F that too!!

And For What?

If I understand correctly, the current CFP system has a look-in clause after a set period and/or if realignment occurs

I think Yormark makes sure that happens any case of changes to the CFP

Exactly. This is the only logical option. Conferences and subdivisions.

Big 10 and SEC wanting to expand for the sake of getting more teams in will kill the sport.

First rule of business: throw out as many ideas out there as possible.
Why?

  1. the entity creating the idea/plan is in control
  2. it creates buzz and puts the creator in the spot light
  3. the masses may compromise down to a solution that was always the realistic outcome for the creator of the idea/plan

I mean have the 10 best CFB teams play the best 10 NFL teams

everybody wins

FYI there are 2 conferences with divisions currently, the Sun Belt and Mac everyone else scrapped divisions in 22-24.

I don’t see teams resting players in the regular season in basketball because of the tournament. Seeding is still very important.

The reality is the difference between 24 or 25 teams and 16 teams, if they don’t go crazy with byes is 1 game. Unless the money is insane I don’t think the blue bloods will like this, sure there may be some 18 seed Alabama’s making a run but I can also see a 4 seed Alabama being knocked out in the second round by a team they are looking past.

That’s true.

I didn’t really consider the seeding component.

I guess you’re right that teams will have incentives to play strong throughout the regular season, but man that’s going to be a seriously intense year for student athletes. Lots of games for those that make it far.

This is what I would love to see.

Sunday of week 15 after all the regular season games are played 28 or 24 teams seeded with 1 round, straight round robin with 1 playing 28 or 24 ect. at the home of the higher seed, 1 week to prepare, only 1 week for the lower seed to try and mobilize their fan base, then after that you have 12 or 14 teams left, you then can re-seed the entire field and give byes ect. Leaving the rest of the field to go play traditional bowl games.
