Big ten proposes 24 to 28 team playoff field

Let’s see… 10 teams from the Big10, 10 teams from the SEC and 8 for everybody else !!

What’s holding back P2 is the fear among TV execs (ESPN) that there will not be sufficient viewers to fund it.

Right now ESPN is claiming 22M subscribers but that is sketch; they are double counting ESPN+ subscribers like me who basically only got ESPN + due to then Disney Plus app package. The expectation is that the ESPN Streaming App will be decoupled from that in the next year or so, at which point the expectation is that number will drop precipitously to around 2M to 3M. Fox doesn’t even have a subscriber based app.

Add to that fear of lawsuits and politicians and that is why P2 is way off.

The SEC and ESPN are in bed together?

Executives chasing the stock market will be the downfall of society…

Exactly!

16 teams seems more reasonable, and much easier to square away, schedule wise. I think all the leagues would go for it, too.

To many people at ESPN and the SEC/B1G corporate chasing the money. They want to turn the college model into the NFL model which ultimately will fail as college fans are different. Once it fully becomes NFL lite, why not just watch the NFL.

Need to kill the non-profit status since they are all about the profit.

Just wait until the IRS sticks its nose into this mess. I will be a real party then!

Clear enough?

Well you know, it’s going to look like that no matter what playoff format we get. Remember, the SEC took out byes for conference winners.

If you are not ranked top 4 or top 8 in this case, you don’t get a bye.

In a fewer words. ITS THE CARTLEL.

What ross dellenger is not reporting is what will make this 24 teams format.
What he is also not reporting is that the BIG12 and every other conference apart from the big10 and sec can shut down any format they do not like.

24 or 28 team playoffs begs the question………why bother with the regular season.

Answer: to see who deserves to get into the playoffs.

It’s like with D3. They play a 10 game regular season with a 40 team playoff.

All 27 conference champions get auto bids, and there are a few at large bids divided out on a regional basis by power index.

So yeah, the regular season MATTERS…because if you don’t kick ass during it, then you won’t get in the playoffs and won’t have any shot at a natty.

10 conference champs and a handful of at large would be ideal. Of course that would mean the big10 and sec consolidated for no reason. Or the teams that moved to big10 and sec did so at their own detriment.

Maybe a 10/6 model and we restructure the conferences to make them equally competitive/regional, then collectively negotiate for a media deal.

10 conference champs is not going to happen.

The talent gap between P4 (especially SEC/B1G) and G5 doesn’t justify having every G5 champ in the playoff.

Having the highest rank G5 get an autobid is acceptable, because that typically entails a win over a strong P4 opponent in the OOC.

Then they need to split the division

Yeah, either G6 teams are good enough to compete or they’re not. None of this “oh, we’ll include the top one and pretend we’re being inclusive” crap.

They would never say that.
