Big12 and its Autonomy Status

Some rumination

  1. Will Houston become an autonomous institution immediately upon invitation to the big12.
  2. The NCAA grants autonomy to conference and their member institutions. Does this mean Houston upon joining the big12 will “ always “ be an autonomous school even if the the conference is raided.

5.3.2.1.2 Areas of Autonomy. The Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference and their member institutions are granted autonomy in the following areas to permit the use of resources to advance the legitimate educational or athletics-related needs of student-athletes and for legislative changes that will otherwise enhance student-athlete well-being: (Adopted: 8/7/14)

Autonomy 5 designation has NO EXPIRATION DATE as long as the status is in place. Five conferences INCLUDING THE BIG 12 were given designation by the NCAA Division 1 Board of Directors (made up of 18 school presidents).

That NCAA Board would have to reconvene and intentionally reverse the designation for the Big 12 and provide justification for doing so. THAT AIN’T HAPPENING.

As long as there is an Autonomy 5 designation, the Big 12 and it’s member institutions will be a part of that.
