Is that related to “the new Idaho?” ![]()
at this rate we might win the big 12 by 5 games this season ![]()
Does anyone here feels like the analytics sometimes are way over played/hyped up? Is there a huge difference between top 15 Off 131 and 125? or top 15 Def of 87 vs 94? A couple of games off the norm and those numbers could flip flop. That’s like comparing someone thats got a 99 school avg with someone thats got a 94 avg. They’re all really good. Any can beat anyone from those range. IMO just a way for people to generate content…talking abt it or writing about it. But coming down to it…the top ones are really close.
@RGVCoog lol which state?
I don’t think they are “overrated”, but generally do think they are “useless” without other context or proper sorting/comparison.
More or less, if you watch a team consistently (with objectivity), you’ll have a pretty good idea about the strengths and weakness of the team or individual players. I like using advanced metrics to confirm, deny, or (often) to suggest alternatives to these observations. A big one for me is “impact”, or simply the measure of influence a player has when on the floor.
I love BPM, especially for intra-team comparison, and find that it’s very accurate (at least on Torvik). If you split ISU’s season into sections, think about who the impact players were (then), who they were in January, and who’ve they’ve been during the last month, I think the advanced metrics paint a pretty clear picture. Jefferson has been our best player (in terms of impact) the entire year. Lipsey struggled to start, Keshon was hotter, then Jones caught fire. Over the last month Keshon has stunk, Jones has struggled, while Heise has soared.
The one blip that really sticks out is Chatfield. He’s thrived against some weaker competition, was the benefactor of several easy buckets (from great passess…primarily from Jefferson), then played admirably against Houston (who did a poor job taking advantage of him on traps). The advanced stats have made him look like our 3rd or 4th best player the last month, but is he? No, but he HAS been better he was the previous month.
The problem with some team vs team comparisons is its impossible to add the kind of context you can for players (especially within a team). There are too many teams, too many variables, too many games to watch.
I’d place the most credence on intra-concference performance. Even though the schedule is imbalanced, teams have the same competition, the same comparison points, and that lends itself to a LOT of accuracy. If you sort the conference for the season, then also split into halves, I think it paints a very accurate picture of the teams and relative strengths and weaknesses. Houston’s been consistently great, Texas Tech has been very good (the entire year), Arizona has been good, BYU went from upper mid-pack to top 4 in conference, and Iowa State has stunk the entire month of February.
Jan 1 - now (full conference season)
Jan 1 - Jan 31
Feb 1 - now
No it is more like comparing someone who hits .310 and one who hits .270. One is in the hall of fame, the other is a solid everyday player. OPS is a better metric, but figured I’d use the old stuff.
Analytics are sometimes good, sometimes worthless……it really just depends on if they help make whatever my current point is.
A crafty Big12 Hoop Weds.
All on MUSH+ not ideal.
Set 4 Big 12 Whip’round.
" Jizzle James keeps accelerating his game,"
Hmmm…
Well that sucked.

I am not a fan of Hurley at ASU. Holy cow
Koa should be taking notes about that if he’s still uncommitted then lol
This color guy in the BYU game is awful.
Conference did its job tonight.
BYU solid quad one road win should put Cougs closer to 25 than 30 in net hopefully
UCF winning gets them closer to 75 giving quad one wins to everyone who won in Orlando (not you, Aggy. You lost).
Arizona clobbered Utah.

a win at Arizona State being a quad 1 win is a joke
they had a surprisingly good noncon showing and its not like they’ve gotten completely humiliated in several conference games like utah
I agree. But I’ll take it.
They did beat arguably the best mid-major this year in SMC and another really good one in UNM in the non-conference. Only losses were to Florida and Gonzaga.
The quad system sucks. winning at tech, Arizona, and Kansas count the same as winning at Arizona state. They play defense like the French during WW2
