Eighteen games gives teams more control over who they play. Match-ups with P4 teams in other conferences helps teams prepare for the post-season, and I think players look forward to playing a good team they are unfamiliar with. Two more games that teams have control over allow the scheduling of a four team MTE tournament.
I donât think of the two extra games so much for NIL opportunities, although that is certainly a possibility, I think of it adding competitive matchups outside the B12 Conference, preferably as home games.

âAllâ may be too strong of a word. Nowadays, if MTEs want to attract top teams, there has to be a NIL component to it.
For the Houston Hoops Showdown to thrive, it needs a healthy NIL that is advertised, and it needs to be a tournament, with a winner. That requires a
two day tournament. That complicates logistics. The only teams from Texas I would invite would be Texas or Texas A&M. They will bring fans. The other schools in Texas are either in the B12 or wonât bring enough fans to make a difference.

The stuff you guys mentioned are absolutely important reasons to cite against the 20 game schedule.
The primary reason, for CKS in particular as well as many others, is physical. (Otz talked about this to CF last yr and cited CKS in particular as agreeing)
Itâs simply just the wear-and-tear aspect of a 20 game big 12 schedule. This necessarily includes increased short turnarounds, travel fatigue in these bigger conferences, and just simply 2 less big 12 rock fights.
Hereâs another aspect related to that you might be unaware of. Big 12 coaches are DEAD SET against playing 2 December conference games like the Big 10 does.
The reasoning for THIS is related to NIL and portal concerns, but not necessarily financial.
You see, this forces coaches like CKS or TJ Otzelberger to âcommitâ much earlier to a 7 man roation. This is increasingly a touchy subject for rosters that are âyear to yearâ, and the implications of getting it wrong are magnified in this era.
You âcommitâ to player A on December 10th over player B, player B and their camp are gonna take note in a bad way. You decide on January 3rd player B was actually the better choice for you right now, player A and their camp will take note in an even worse way. You also give them the winter break to bemoan and stew about it with their close friends and family.
For this reason, coaches like CKS, Self, Otz, realize the value in just starting on Jan 3rd anyways. Big ten coaches do too, fwiw, they just have less pull. Simple as that. It minimizes undesired roster upheavel. This kind of forces the leagueâs hand to take away bye weeks and add âback to backsâ, which the coaches obviously also hate, just slightly less. Itâs a priorities thing. To get to a 20 game schedule that minimizes wear and tear, you take away a lot of flexibility and add uncertainty personnel-wise.
Think about how long it took you guys to figure out the Mercy-McCarty-Harwell, âwhich one (or two)â saga. Now make that play out a month longer and a month earlier with everything on the line. With a month less data for your staff to go on. Little stuff like that matters to a good staff A LOT.

You want to play everyone once for sure. And ideally a H and H alternating years for the fans.
More is more.
They are good games so I like the extras but as a fan I also like conference only after the break. 18 seems right.

If UC donât win this year at Fifth Third, Kelvin Sampson can just plant a UH flag at center court and we canât do sh*t about it.
Match up wise. I actually think this game has more combined attempted free throws than both meetings last year combined.

This is shaping up to be the best UH basketball schedule in years. In addition to the home and away conference games, UH is scheduled to play, or working to finalize:
- Alabama at Madison Square Garden in the Jimmy V. Classic
- LSU at Toyota Center
- Florida St. at Jacksonville, FL
- Rutgers, Florida or Notre Dame at the Players Era Tournament in Las Vegas, NV
This team will be tested early in these non-conference match-ups. How quickly they jell as a team will determine how well they perform early in the season in conference play.
