What an odd take. More than likely they feel they’ll get farther with aTm in their diploma. Yea, that. But also the fact that the landowners around the Victoria campus have been pushing hard for over a decade to get the school into the aTm system and expect a windfall in increased investment.
This has little to nothing to do with actual student benefits. As I’ve said before, students who want ag-related degrees have numerous choices at other A&M system schools nearby.
This campus can’t grow unless it acquires land somewhere else. The last time this deal cropped up, there was talk of land outside of town being donated if the change was made. That’s where the investment payoff would happen.
You want UHV atm?
We want college station and your PUF part too.
What is this?
Since when a school system takes over one from another school system?
After more than 50 years this is happening?
You think TAMU is going to treat TAMU Victoria like an equal?
Come on now.
That’s what I said - their going to be the last hired but they seem to have a mentality of just wanting to be in the room and will accept crumbs so the ringleader can bask in his glory and rub elbows with the A&M board
Typical t-shirt fan
Exactly! That was my point as well.
Almost gone…
Two steps down, one to go. The transfer of the University of Houston-Victoria to the Texas A&M University Education System looks to be more of a reality as the Texas House of Representatives passed SB 2361, leaving only Gov. Gregg Abbott to sign the bill into law.
break that chart by demographic and it’ll tell the reality
Don’t be surprised if A&M wants to take over UH Clear Lake sayig they have more NASA research projects than UH. And that UHCL is more aligned with the A&M mission.

That’s another reason I don’t like the precedent this sets.
UT may want to play in this game too. UT is the lead institution in
the Texas Space Consortium.
I’d say UH clear lake and the city limits are safe from UT and A$M bc simply we already have a presence here and it duplicates it and we can say no if we want. Victoria is way out from Houston and we oked it. Had we said no then it wouldn’t happen.
To the power of ten.
I moved to Victoria to join the corps of public school teachers in 1982. I was hired to teach ESL with the proviso that I would obtain a newly-required certification. I duly applied at UHV to earn the necessary six hours, six other being waived.
Victoria College shared their facilities with UHV on a plot of land big enough for a classroom/admin building, another big building for VC, a library, and a student center. By the time I left Victoria to return to Houston, UHV had acquired two hotels on Houston Highway and Ben Wilson. Several other buildings were erected. And that apartment complex on Ben Wilson was knocked down to erect a bigger and better student housing. In three decades, UHV became a mini-city.
How did it all begin? City leaders recognized a need for higher learning that Victoria College could not provide, it being a junior college and mostly vocational in nature. The University of Houston responded by jump-starting a college of education and business. There was also a Petroleum Studies Institute (at which my uncle taught one day a week).
Cultural infusion followed in its wake. I had the pleasure of joining the cast for numerous amateur stage productions, and let’s not forget the beloved Jaguars baseball team led by former Astro Terry Puhl.
That was then. This week, I contacted the office of my state senator Carol Alvarado. She voted yes on the switch because this is “what they wanted.” Perplexed, I then called UHV and spoke to someone in public relations. She didn’t seem happy about the situation, and explained that the flagship set this in motion, and didn’t bother to include UHV in the talks.
So, yes, I’m bitter. I hope they don’t expect me to support them with any further donations.
Let’s rephrase the question: “Now that the bill has passed, are you LESS likely to send your child to Texas A&M?”
I’m not aware of any boundary or distance restrictions placed on
a university system, as long it’s physically in the state. UHS should not
be distance restricted. So that part doesn’t hold water for me; but the second part definitely seems to be true. The why of that decision baffles me.
I see Victoria as a growing area that has lots of potential in the next 25-50
years. Hate that the UHS Chancellor didn’t see that or care to fight for it.
I’d like to see that happen. As of now, when I go back to visit family 2-3 times a year, it has the feel of a ghost town. Victoria Mall is as dead as Almeda Mall, and I don’t see any growth in any direction. Graduated students, HS and college, leave for more interesting environs. There’s just nothing for them to do.
I feel you - I saw more fight in two roosters than this like it was basically ok - wait 30 days until the paperwork is official
I want to know the who, what, when, why and how?
If it’s financial just say it
What kind of a precedent is this or has this happened before at this level?
What is stopping uta or atm wanting to take over U of H?
Who are the p…s that voted in favor for this and what are their affiliations with atm?
UH made huge investments on this campus. Is UH going to be reimbursed with interest and who will pay for that reimbursement?
What does this tell us about UH other campuses?
Other states have flagship schools with satellite campuses. They are not changing hands why should UH-Victoria be any different?
Is UHD on the next chopping block?
Did Mr. Khator have a say in this?
It is officially gone now.
No more UH-V.
It is official: Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation officially transferring the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) to the Texas A&M University System. The institution, now named Texas A&M University-Victoria, becomes the 12th university in the Texas A&M System, a move that promises educational and economic growth.
