I thought we chose as a strategy to have the Medical School closer to the campus to support the community. Also, the Fertita College of Medicine is a member of the Texas Medical Center.
In reality, it seems this was established years ago and very likely was always going to evolve to be a full med school, and not just the medical engineering. It looks to me like their focus and mission would be different from UH’s FCM.
I do wonder how that will affect residency slots which are crucial to any med school - that’s the part where the two schools may have overlapping needs.
At least that’s what I gather from my surface level readings of this. If someone has more detailed understanding, I look forward to hearing it.

So what? It should not happen. This Medical School is clearly about education and therefore goes against what UH is for.
How is that going to be funded? Let me guess?
We let this happen what is coming next? Then why not allow utHouston?

That’s a horribly put together sentence. I think you meant to say that it would be a duplication of services and cause for potential cannibalization of the Fertita College of Medicine that is still in it’s infancy.
I think that’s the question, is this potential new med school actually meeting a market need or not. Is there actually room for both programs without cannabilization or sacraficing one over the other.
I think that is a different argument, because that would be a whole new university. The TX A&M thing is more of an expansion of their Medical Engineering program already established in Houston to include a medical school. Certainly many of the arguments for or against would be similar for either of those.

No, it was officially signed into law months ago. They may have had a ceremonial signing today though. The changeover is effective Sept 1 but they have been working towards it for a while. Classes for this semester at UHV start Sept 2 which is generally late but I think done intentionally for this.

FYI, Any legislation that passed from the regular TX Legislature session this year already was signed, vetoed, or became law without signature. Anything being signed now is from one of the special sessions or it is just a ceremonial signing. Usually most new laws from the legislature take effect Sept 1, some are immediate upon signing, and I guess some occasionally have some arbitrary number of days after signing but usually no later than Sept 1.
Well, almost all gone…the person that maintains the website needs to be a little more thorough in the job. Pet peeve of mine, keep information up to date; take pride in whatever you do.

Legally they are separate entities now. However, technologically they aren’t separate yet. I believe all the tech stuff is being worked on and likely completely switching over at the end of the year.
